Honestly, part of the reason is that I'm always hot, so why would I keep a sweater around?

It helps that @raforall.bsky.social is a friend, but I do feel like this is one of the better episodes I've done.

In this episode, I chat with Becky about her deep involvement and interest in the horror genre, the inspiration and process behind her book, the diversity of voices in horror, how horror can foster empathy and address real-world anxieties, and the dangers of quicksand (it’s everywhere).

Circulating Ideas 298: WHY I LOVE HORROR by Becky Siegel Spratford @raforall.bsky.social circulatingideas.com/transcripts/...

The best part, of course, is that it's pronounced "duh-CUE-la."

The boring reason is that the city founders wanted to call it "Hoke" but USPS rejected it because there was already a city with that name in GA, and instead of coming up with something original, they smooshed together the names of two nearby cities, Decatur and Atlanta, to come up with "Dacula."

It’s not psychologically sustainable to spend every waking minute both terrified and embarrassed. It’s like being a civilian in Gotham when the villain on a tear is the fucking Clock King.

ALA has been more vocal about it in the past few years with members. I'm sure they weren't actively hiding things before, but most members are not combing through the minutes of Executive Board meetings to learn about the org's financial health. Feels like there was an inflection point recently.

I mean, I'm really glad that they are being more transparent about it and taking steps to address it, but I still don't understand how things got this bad in the first place!

I loved it! It was a good blend of supernatural and real world horrors, and I ended up feeling empathy for even the vilest characters by the end of the book, so great character work.

If I got my hands on a demon, I would have him make you write another Lyndsey Duncan book! πŸ˜‰

Had fun chatting with @raforall.bsky.social for the podcast. If all goes well, the episode should drop on Tuesday, and you can hear us talking about her new book, WHY I LOVE HORROR, and lots of other stuff!

(And of course there's some SEEKRIT stuff that will end up on the cutting room floor!)

Yay, my hold came in for FIEND by @almakatsu.bsky.social!

Over centuries, the Berisha family has ruthlessly amassed wealth and power, but at what cost to themselves? Will the next generation continue under the dark cloud that follows the family, or can they steer their legacy in a new direction?
