1/3 of Boston & Cambridge households are car-free—among the highest rates for major US cities

Those households are concentrated near T stations, especially downtown, along the Heath St & Boston College branches of the Green Line, and in parts of Cambridge served by the Red Line

sometimes people ask me why I read Hacker News. this. it's articles like this almost entirely. if I had another way to find stuff like this I wouldn't bother.

NSA detected phone call between foreign intelligence and a person close to Trump Whistleblower says that Tulsi Gabbard blocked agency from sharing report and delivered it to White House chief of staff

Is anybody ever gonna take a step back and realize the "Russia Russia Russia" people — derided as lunatic wine moms — were actually underplaying the foreign influence stuff, and the loud people who kept insisting it was all fake are now saying Jeffrey Epstein was kind of a cool guy?

i started researching Russian disinfo networks in 2014 and writing about them in 2015 and the sheer amount of smug online assholes who dismissed every piece of reporting as CIA propaganda or whatever will never not piss me off

California ballot proposal would exempt seniors from paying property taxes The initiative still needs enough signatures of support to be put in front of voters on the November ballot

it's not enough for california boomers that they got to enrich themselves at the expense of their own children through prop 13 letting them pay peanuts in property taxes as their shitty mcmansions and ranch homes ballooned to multiple million price tags, now they want to stop paying entirely?

The Mommy Party is always responsible for cleaning up the Daddy Party's mess. Failure to do so because Daddy beat her too hard to remain upright is Mommy's fault for being too shrill and annoying. This too is gender.

one reason it would be pro-capitalism and pro-innovation and yadda yadda to institute a wealth tax so no one could be worth more than like $10b maximum is its very obvious that once these guys reach truly mind-melting levels of wealth they get lazy, decadent, druggy, and just generally washed-up.

There are two kinds of programming you should never do in Java

1. Synchronous
2. Asynchronous

strong locks, weakly held

07.02.2026 22:27 — 👍 5    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

this was made even funnier by the fact that this potential deadlock had been discovered (correctly!) by a different LLM, one of @ed3d.net's code reviewer agents

Turns out I kinda hate concurrent programming in Java as compared to Erlang. Who’da thunk it

sometimes you get these suggestions that literally only sound good on a surface level and make no sense whatsoever logically

07.02.2026 22:18 — 👍 5    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

had an LLM suggest I take a lock “briefly” the other day as a way to avoid deadlock, after it noticed an unsynchronized access I had put in intentionally. Buddy you can’t hold a lock briefly enough to avoid a deadlock in every case, that’s what a deadlock is!

it’s funny because it looks so traditional from the outside especially compared to the Congregationalist church across the street (not hugely dissimilar in the kind of people it attracts; though is explicitly Christian ofc) but it’s probably the least churchiest church in town culturally/socially

First Parish in Lexington as seen from the Battle Green. It’s the churchiest looking church you’ve ever seen: all white, tall narrow steeple with a clock at the bottom.

oh that’s awesome, I love Frank Lloyd Wright but I’ve never been. I grew up going here which is a beautiful building in a very different way

Don’t think so but that’s hilarious lol. I so rarely meet other UUs in the wild. Get along great with Reform Jews though (honestly pretty much anyone that isn’t a Christian and rude about it)
