That's how it always goes. The center-spun-as-left offer condolences; the right froth at the mouth and call for the heads of everyone to the left of Newt Gingrich on a pike on the grounds that we're all somehow complicit (or just not distraught enough).

The right don't want to risk the reality contradicting the script. Might put a damper on their totalitarian plans.

I've gone on a few rants elsewhere about how they're controlled opposition. They act like they're obligated to act like loyal opposition and to be gracious both in victory and in defeat; and the right enforce this via shaming and threats, and are under no such obligations themselves.

He was one of the cult's thought leaders. The right deems that more important than public service. And as for the centrists mourning him: I think it's about half the compulsive need to be "loyal opposition," and half fear that unhinged cult members will come for them.

I was once again reminded of the existence of Paul Gallico's story "The Enchanted Doll." I was once again reminded that while there are certainly things about it that I can appreciate: it remains that I really don't like it.
