Support So we've been using an Al agent since November to answer leadership questions about metrics. It seemed amazing at first fast answers, detailed explanations, everyone loved it. I just found out it's been hallucinating numbers this entire time. Our VP of sales made territory decisions based on data that didn't exist. Our CFO showed the board a deck with fake insights. The Al was just inventing plausible sounding percentages. I only caught it by accident when someone asked me to double check something. I started digging, and holy shit, it's bad.

COLORED PEOPLE OF BOATON, ONE AND ALL, You are hereby respectfully CAUTIONED and advised, to avoid conversing with the watchmen and police officers of Boston, for since the recent ORDER OF THE MAYOR & ALDERMEN, they are empowered to act as KIDNAPPERS AND SLAVE CATCHERS, and they have already been actually employed in KIDNAPPING, CATCHING, AND KEEPING SLAVES, therefore, if you value your LIBERTY, and the welfare of fugitives among you, shun them in every possible manner, as so many HOUNDS on the track of the most unfortunate of your race. No performative disaffection. Just changing the course of things little by little.

So I live well, spend time every day in meditation, and walk with full mindfulness that every action has consequences and every attitude informs action, and that I don't have to inflict more suffering on myself than I'm already getting. And it's working. I'm inflicting less suffering on myself.

Also I should stop worrying that I'll be reborn in some privileged realm and be corrupted by it. I've been put in positions of trust and authority and I did not take advantage of it. I've made wise decisions even when no one would fault me for making the less wise decision. That bodes well.

Likewise it seems more wise to me to take compassion upon yourself for letting slip a tear or a harsh word every now and then because let's face it, unless you're a bodhisattva you're going to do that. Who knows? Perhaps even Bodhisattvas cry.

I'm not falling into the error that a state of joy is the key to enlightenment. But I'm not sure joylessness is an enlightened state either. I'd rather laugh like Budai than be completely disaffected.

But I wonder how many others get caught up in their zeal to prove themselves enlightened and in the process deceive themselves about where they actually are emotionally speaking and how strong their attachments actually are, and they carry a secret pain that will drag them down in the end.

Or perhaps what I'm reading into this is a reflection of where I am on my own path. Perhaps my progress in this life will be defined simply by rooting out the most immediately destructive attachments I have. The ones that are an actual danger to me and anything beyond that would be performance.

I think the fundamental ideas behind non-attachment are sound enough. Attachment IS a source of most or all of our suffering. I also think we need to be honest with ourselves about what we're feeling in the moment and why and not perform disaffection just because we feel we ought to.

If everyone wants to be unaffected by attachment, and the proof of non-attachment is to be completely unaffected, you just create an incentive reward system for performative stoicism don't you? How many ascetics are honest about their feelings vs performing disaffection?

Some of the ways I've seen non-attachment practiced come off more as spiritual bypassing than as sound practice. The avoidance of suffering and dissatisfaction by avoidant behavior. It's nuances like this I question most about Buddhism in its organized form.
