The problem with precious metals as currency has always been supply. And as no other countries circulate precious metals as actual currency vs bullion issues, buyers worldwide would treat these coins the same as bullion. But if that's issued currency then that kind of hoarding creates shortages.

I'm saying if they started using, say, silver in a misguided attempt to revive the dollar you would have people hoarding the coins before they got into circulation. And there's a subset of people who think this would be a good idea.

Scenario: Economy collapses. Fed chair replaced with conspiracy nut. Said conspiracy nut goes on to revert US coins to base metals to revalue the currency. US coins start being hoarded worldwide. Currency shortage ensues.

It absolutely tracks that this is all rooted in post-Soviet Third Romism.

That's true. A lot of immigrants work in tech including defense tech. They're probably not comfortable with how immigrants are being treated right now. Many employers may be unwilling to pay $100k for a visa when they can hire a broke graduate for $50k because all jobs are becoming low wage now.
