They are very literally turning off the lights on cancer research. They will also do serious damage to the economy. Every $1 spent by NIH generates $2.50 in economic activity. It is in equal measure stupid and cruel. It needs to be stopped. Call your congress members and tell them. 4/4

In 1946, the director of research for the March of Dimes, Harry Weaver, wanted to give a Harvard professor a grant to study polio. Harvard wasn't going to accept it. So Weaver offered to add a percentage to make sure the research was fully paid for. Harvard accepted the grant, and 2/4

In the mid-20th century, it wasn't unusual for universities to turn down research grants. Grants would pay for equipment and supplies to do the research. But the university would be on the hook for providing physical facilities, utilities, support staff, etc. Taking a grant could be a net -ve. 1/4
