The questions I get as a librarian for a medical school are much different this year. Things like, "What will happen if PubMed goes away?", and "Should I set up a VPN so can I safely search the literature for research on 'taboo' topics?". I feel for these students- it's going to be rough

Librarians are trying to plan for the 45% reduction of ERIC. While the Department of Education has not (yet) released a title list of journals that are being de-selected, we're trying to create a list via a grassroots effort. View and contribute journal titles here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

The Institute for Museum and Library Services Is Now a Propaganda Machine: Book Censorship News, March 21, 2025 DOGE didn't dismantle the only federal agency supporting public libraries. It was instead turned into a propaganda machine. That, plus this week's book censorship news.

By being β€œin lockstep” with the Admin, the IMLS will not support the range of projects & initiatives it has been since its inception. Instead, it will support projects, ideas, & institutions which align with values & beliefs aligned with the oligarchical ruling class.

In this proposal, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) & NHGRI would become part of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).

How One State’s β€˜Intellectual Diversity’ Law Has Changed Professors’ Teaching Public colleges in Indiana are now required to make rules for disciplining faculty who don’t promote free expression. Instructors across the state say they’ve gotten the message.

Remember when "conservatives" warned us "PC" would limit "free inquiry" in college? Remember when they told us "DEI" would warp curricula and make people afraid of honest discussions? Remember when they bitched about "chilled intellectual climates?" Every accusation was fucking projection.

AI search engines cite incorrect sources at an alarming 60% rate, study says CJR study shows AI search services misinform users and ignore publisher exclusion requests.

Columbia Journalism Review tested eight generative AI search tools and found their answers were wrong 60% of the time, and the paid ones actually fared worse than the free ones.

Meanwhile, millions of people trust the way they present total bullshit with confident language.

Opinion | Will They Come for PubMed Next? Here's what we lose if the administration takes away this invaluable resource

The only reason I keep my Audible subscription is because that's the only place I can get your audiobooks. I'd love to not give Bezos any more money. Is there any plan for a change in your audiobook distributor? Thanks!

[Watched] Part 2: What can AI help with in relation to literature search? Concludes with the very reasonable & obvious idea that most of these new AI tools, lack transparency & likely have poor sensitivity so can only be used for exploring/scoping. (1) youtu.be/9DI1lO_U9lE?...

What if We Can't Rely on PubMed? - Absolutely Maybe PubMed is incredibly reliable. And a lot depends on it. It’s an ecosystem built around MEDLINE, the steady feed of new publications…

Hate that it has come to this, but it's time to consider PubMed vulnerable to enshittification. My latest post @plos.org discusses the lines we need to fight to hold – and alternatives we can rely on internationally:
