In 2024 Oakland implemented a 4 car lane to 1 car lane road diet on 13th St in Downtown using only paint. Itโs not perfect but this relatively cheap change has helped a lot w speeding.
The perpendicular Webster corridor is the same width & needs a similar update ASAP.

12th and Webster intersection has cars parked in the daylighting zone which blocks visibility. Text on the image says State mandates 20ft of red curb at intersections to enhance visibility.
Protected intersections like 14th St, diagonal parking like 13th St, and corner bulb-outs like 12th St could have slowed the driver to a safe speed
But most importantly OakDOT must add the required 20ft of daylighting immediately before anyone else is killed here!

Despite making up just six percent of Oakland Streets, Chinatown is the site of more than 60% of the cityโs severe and fatal crashes. Half of Chinatown Streets are on Oaklandโs 2024 High Injury Network, which have the highest density of severe crashes. Read more about the 2024 Oakland High Injury Network here: www. oaklandca.gov/resources/high-injury-network-2024. The High Injury Network includes Webster Street and Harrison Street, which community members selected for re-design in the Chinatown Complete Streets Plan. Within Chinatown, the most injury crashes occurred at Harrison Street and 12th Street, where more than 50 people were injured in the past decade. On Harrison Street within Chinatown, more than 150 people were injured in the past decade.
Half of Chinatown's streets are on the High Injury Network, including Webster. It is just a matter of time before someone is killed
Drivers use these wide multi-land roads to speed, and a painted bike lane is not sufficient protection from cars traveling this fast

This winter, AC Transit shelved a notorious case involving a bus driver aggressively driving in the bike lane without any explanation of consequences or changes to training. We need you to share your story! We expect professional transit operators to be more careful and respectful of other road users. AC Transit Board Mtg Tonight, Jan 14, 5PM

It was inspiring to join dozens to stand up for safe streets.

The plastic posts and speed cushions installed on International Blvd successfully reduced pedestrian deaths to zero by discouraging speeding in the bus-only lanes
This intervention saved many of our neighbors lives this year and will continue to save lives into the future
Now make it permanent

If pedestrian deaths can be eliminated on the previously deadly International Boulevard, we should be able to eliminate them on every other street.
We just need the will to do it, especially from policymakers and Caltrans.
Thanks @tvrr.bsky.social for tireless advocacy to achieve this huge win!
