I put a lot of thought into re-harmonizing the "verse" part 7 different ways. I kept hearing "Firebird Suite" in the Olympics figure skating (which I knew from the lead-in music on the "Yessongs" live album, lol), and realized that's what's happening there too - same melody constantly reharmonized.

"Fences" resonated because I have extended family who grew up in Pittsburgh in the '50s/'60s and I recognized those characters and their struggles with what success means and what success is "allowed."

I've only seen the 3 August Wilson film adaptations, and "Seven Guitars" in a Chicago production that didn't do anything for me. But my God, what a writer!

I didn't see the play so I don't know if the film dialed up the supernatural elements, but it's definitely a crossroads type of choice of selling your cultural heritage for a financial stake in life (land), with the choice being offered by those who enslaved you.
