Important to recognise austerity has been instrumental to the immigration debate:

Not only has HO staff cuts increased delays, but cuts across public services has made people worse off.

The same politicians have capitalised on this, not by demanding better services, but by blaming immigrants …

UK returned far greater proportion of failed applicants before the 2008 GEC.

Since 2010, the Tories who made immigration a key campaign issue, presided over an exponential rise in immigration numbers, delays to processing asylum applications, & therefore the cost of housing claimants.

Immigration was central to the anti EU campaign.

Leaving the EU hasn’t made the slightest difference to tackling migration. It has just altered the demographic of the average migrant worker here (with fewer, better skilled EU workers).

Nobody saying politicians should ignore voters. Certainly not saying people smuggling isn’t a serious problem: we want MPs to tackle it

But by definition a distraction isn’t addressing the problem. The Right wing win a lot of attention & votes peddling the issue, but they aren’t solving anything.

… These aren’t solutions. They are agendas used to get voters to accept change that is most likely detrimental to a majority of voters.
