My favorite film of 2020, everyone should watch Bacurau. (And the directorโ€™s new film, The Secret Agent, is fantastic as well!)

There is no way you can guess how the thread that ends in this instant classic begins.

Despite widespread claims, there are not many mediaeval pubs still serving. The ones that survive are all inns. The best preserved is the New Inn at Gloucester. We know from tree-ring dating that construction began in 1432 and it was first mentioned in the records in 1455 ๐Ÿงต

Crypto fun: if you'd bought a load of ethereum, supposedly the future of crypto, in 2018 when it was still pretty new it has returned less than if you had bought S&P500. If you bought in 2021 during the last boom you'd be *down*, versus a 2x gain in the S&P 500 total return

A moment, please, to consider the absolute majesty of Daphne Oram's unbelievable score to this. A pitch shifted, time stretched, frequency agile glimpse of the future of music production; a liberty-taking all analogue remix of Sandy Nelson's Teen Beat realised in real time with the visuals.

โ€œA vote for Labour is the only way to stop Reformโ€

Or

โ€œLabour can actually do what Reform only claims it can doโ€

The government needs to pick one strategy, not both. The government seems unaware that voters can actually hear it trying both messages at once.

Iโ€™m not exactly anti-borders, as I recognise there is a theoretical point where immigration numbers present a logistical challenge, but I straight up do not understand the mindset that doesnโ€™t take pride in people choosing to live in your country

This is a horrible policy, and a complete capitulation to the ugliest forces behind Reform's popularity

Exactly. People judge their income tax by looking at the line on their payslip that says income tax. If the number goes up, they'll know that income tax has increased! Doesn't really matter if it's owing to rates or thresholds or removal of benefits

Minded to think the market (etc) reaction will end up causing them to have to u-u-turn. Quite an achievement to u-turn (repeatedly) on your budget before the budget

Growing up in a time when โ€œselling outโ€ was the most shameful thing you could do and then being forced to live through the 2020s feels like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

According to recent reporting a lot of the Britannia hotels used for asylum seekers are far worse. And the key feature of hotels - that you are waited on as a guest at your leisure - is clearly not present

The clever thing about going for stuff like the cycle for work scheme is itโ€™s really noticeable, affects people with lots of media access and platforms, annoys green groups, and raises almost no revenue at the same time. Real win/win/win there.

Ember forecasts no increase in fossil generation as wind and solar are growing fast enough to meet all new electricity demand.

Reflection in a Dead Diamond takes this idea to its extreme, albeit influenced more by Italian comics and Diabolik than by Bond. Apparently it had more walk outs than any other film at the Prince Charles when it screened in London Film Festival

Even if this garden were destroyed in order to create *an entire new town* that would surely be a price worth paying. But Jonn's point that the "threat" is just to the view makes this a disgustingly out of touch point if view

I feel like we have the opportunity to turn David Lynch's quote into this moment's "Keep Calm and Carry On" and it's a far better rallying cry too.
