β€˜It's a classic scene of Flaubertian ironic alternation: he pairs the agricultural fair with the seduction scene, cutting like a camera to and fro between outside and inside.’

Here's our find. An album of hundreds of QSL cards. Sent by radio hams to each other to acknowledge contact. Most are from the late 1930s and from all over the world. Dumped in in a skip after a house clearance. Found the family and offered to send them the album. They didn't reply.

Urban expansion in the age of liberalism Many Victorian cities grew by tenfold in a century. Could ours ever do the same?

In unrelated news, Paul Mazursky's autobiographical NEXT STOP, GREENWICH VILLAGE premiered fifty years ago tonight & remains exhilarating, even if one doesn't live down the street from where it's set, as we do. And damn, that supporting cast: Walken! Winters! Goldblum! Ellen Greene! Lois Smith!

Well, it’s the 264th anniversary today of a sΓ©ance held to locate the elusive ghost Scratching Fanny of Cock Lane. There were many sΓ©ances, in fact, because the noisy ghost was a media sensation, but only this one was attended by Samuel Johnson... 🧡

These mounds aren't going anywhere: street artists in Philly have started tagging the piles of snow!
