Agree, *and* i once shoveled packed sidewalk snow onto the steps of some college kids' rowhouse who were obliviously playing video games just inside at the time. They probably came out & said "oh cool we have a slide now!"

Montreal turned one into one of my favorite parks. Awesome experience, well maintained. Also provides stormwater mgmt in area that had regular localized flooding.

Put it right in my veins
(so long as theres thought given to payment alternatives like highway trash pickup to pay off the fee)

The "sneckdown," improved: paths cleared for pedestrians, with snow & ice piled up near the corners to keep cars moving & turning slowly for weeks after the rest of the snow melts

When it comes to traffic calming, nature *can* be improved upon. May our snow safety awareness cones last til April

They apparently don't have the capacity to clear *streets* in Philadelphia. It's been days and now the plan is apparently "wait til it gets warm" (10 goddam days later).

The police were on scene redirecting traffic. A trolley was stuck blocking an intersection. The owner of the car couldn't be found. All because of one improperly stored car. This just shouldn't be possible.

Went to request a hold at my library, found it wasn't available (πŸ˜ͺ), discovered the "interlibrary loan" system (😍), requested it that way. It's been a journey!

Days in, over 50% of cars stored for free on this trolley corridor hadn't been moved. On day 1, a single improperly stored car left 4 trolleys stuck and dozens of people left stranded outdoors at trolley stops sub-20⁰ temps. Just remove private cars from transit corridors already.

Only 30% over budget? Rookie numbers here in the US

There were literally tech bros caught inventing the bus on youtube and it was amazing. I miss the marchrutka, rode many in KZ.

EVs especially have way too much power (torque). Give me a "speed limit" car and I'd consider one. But there's so much EV race-pilled marketing

That's a steal! I've recently focused more on building a strong queue of library holds. Last trip to my local bookstore set me back $75. Ouch

Sorry! Many trollish replies start that way. AFAIK they do well with costs for transit in the northern EU, b/c scale: the specialized and efficient contractors have constant work. Here in the US, we reinvent processes every transit project. I've also heard of rising costs in the EU lately tho

I think this whenever I look at what was actually built in every city in our country

I've been. Halifax would pour rocket fuel on it's tourism industry by doing even the cheapest/free parts of these changes. It's an awesome town as is, would be amazing if more walkable.

28.01.2026 16:16 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

How do we make some inception happen so tech bros think it's their idea, like when they invented the bus?

28.01.2026 16:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Even if they just do the cheapest/free parts (daylighting & removing excessive car storage), they can achieve immediate improvements

28.01.2026 16:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

For those who may say "good for Oslo but I live in ______": Removing excessive on-street car storage and daylighting intersections are both are essentially free and can be implemented in weeks rather than years. Just ask Hoboken, a city that has had 0 deaths for years, mostly by these methods.

This snow is teaching me a lot about how poorly Philadelphia's government functions, as well as where we shouldn't allow private cars to drive.

In their defense they probably thought one remote day, max. Streets are still a mess and we're left to fend for ourselves to clear plowed in curb cuts. Its ri-goddam-diculous

28.01.2026 15:24 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Suspend trash removal & let streets focus on plowing & salting for the week, instead of doing a mediocre version of both. Sounds like a low enough bar for even a moderately functional city to clear.
