I have written about politics and culture for forty years, more recently focusing on social movements and emotions. I split my time between Asheville, NC, and Anna Maria Island, FL.

Messrs. Musk and Ramaswamy are so unappealing, arrogant, and selfish, I wonder if they could help inspire a backlash against our billionairocracy? Of course I wondered the same thing about Trump in 2026.

In a stroke, those lovable, imaginative pranksters become tormenters of an enslaved man (James, not Jim) who cannot fight back and indeed has to play along. James rewrites from his own POV and in his own voice the most influential novel in US history.
