Thank you for the dictionary reference! I am looking at editions of a political chapbook that doesn't change content at all between editions but does change title page information. These terms switch back and forth, so I am curious if it was an advertising tactic to buy the new edition.

Can anyone point me to a resource that discusses what "corrected" vs "with amendments" on an 18c title page would have indicated to readers? #bookhistory #eighteenthcentury #britishliterature

Screenshot of an 18th century advertisement which says "ADVERTISEMENT. If either of the Two notorious Magazine-Pyrates shall invade our just Property, by putting this PROPHECY, or any Part of it, into their Monthly Libels of Theft and Scan-dal; they may be hereby assured, that the same TRAP shall be baited in which they have lately been taken for Sermon-Stealing. J.O."
Does anyone have any information on the "sermon-stealing" mentioned in this advertisement? It is from a chapbook called Nixon's Cheshire Prophecy at Large by John Oldmixon sold by Curll, Pemberton, and Corbett in 1740. I suspect the "Monthly Libels" are Gentleman's Magazine and London Magazine.

I don't think my students believe me when I tell them that most of DH text analysis is: you try something, you realize the data is still messy, you clean it, and repeat. Until you have a thrice-postponed "really this time for real" deadline on the calendar, and you commit to something that works.
