My dad was a Dublin gent and never wore jeans, slacks all the time. He did wear tracksuits and such for golf and tennis. Shorts were worn rarely on holidays (though a lot on the tennis court).

Another thing uniting students of all stripes is that his diploma was revoked. The students had planned protests about that before he was arrested. Nothing like feeling the result of years of hard work and exams can be ripped up to make people angry. Not addressing that could also lead to problems.

I'm sorry for your loss.

The Gist: Paul Duane's "My Christmas Memories" Horror film director, Paul Duane, gives us a Christmas ghost story haunted by the stuff of childhood memory. This is the Guest Gist.

Fresh Gist: Paul Duane's new short story, My Christmas Memories

@paulduane.bsky.social's nameless narrator chatters brightly through some breezy reminisces of 90s Irish kids TV before things go off the rails. A ghost story, haunted by memories of childhood.

Happy Christmas Pat, been a damp and miserable one here. The weather I should say, the Christmas has been quiet and peaceful!

People who can’t tell the difference between entomology and etymology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

I started rebuilding my relationship with my dad nearly 25 years ago, soon after he had his first grandchild, my niece. I was living in London at the time. We were all going to spend Christmas together, which was often a stressful time with arguments etc. I dreaded it. So I bought him a Santa suit.

Defining genocide: how a rift over Gaza sparked a crisis among scholars New reports by human rights groups use the term to describe Israel’s offensive. The debate has fueled a brutal division among those who study mass violence

For @theguardian.com I wrote about how Gaza has split the academic field of genocide studies.

As one scholar put it, “Where can the field stand if scholars from within and around it are unwilling to call the behaviour out?”

My latest.

Yes! I wish more people realised how much #geology influences wildlife. That's why I always get excited when wildlife documentaries mention geology!

Had read that #Izmir’s Şadırvanlı Cami’s şadırvan in bazaar had been destroyed but pleased to find it still standing, even if frescoed dome looked a bit battered.

Nice story this.

8 kids from Gaza with complex medical needs arrived in Ireland last night for treatment.

A total of 30 are expected to arrive for medical care in Ireland on the scheme organised by the Depts of Health and Foreign Affairs and the Irish Red Cross

It's funny, the little differences between Hiberno-English and English. For example, in Ireland, to "get a land" means to be shocked, whereas in England it's a plan to colonise a country

Séamas O'Reilly: Ireland's solidarity with Palestine is rooted in history — and common cause "Ireland has, in fact, been in Lebanon long enough that some of the local staff who’ve worked closely with them have developed strongly-accented English, as displayed in an old RTÉ news segment that w...

Ireland's solidarity with Palestine isn't down to some belief that we know just what they're going through. It's from knowing we can barely imagine it.

IT IS TIME

The man looked up from his beach chair.

"Really?" He said. "I've only just retired."

Death held up a timer. A single grain was about to fall. And then... It didn't.

CURIOUS

Vetinari shrugged.

"I've only just discovered drinks with little umbrellas. I'll let it fall in a bit" 1/17

Used to be a major source of income here, the cups (which look really cool) were exported for use in tanning. You can still find groves of them around.
