Congrats, this looks spectacular.

High Performance Computing for climate & weather models at NASA's GSFC. Got my name on more monkey movies than average.
Congrats, this looks spectacular.
09.02.2026 17:56 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've even made my own version of the iconic Joy Division-style daily anomaly plot thats updated with 2026 data (to-date): dashboard.theclimate...
09.02.2026 17:48 β π 44 π 10 π¬ 1 π 0Technically, if you want it to french-rouler the bon temps, it will involve a massive trashbin on fire and potentially a guillotine, but let's not get bogged down into details.
08.02.2026 15:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Be part of the solution if you ever want it to manifest, words to live by.
I hope the winds turn in your favor again soon.
Great results from a great group I had the privilege of working alongside.
I think those results can further be strengthened when the original model code can be fully differentiated routinely which we are well on our way to do (JAX, our tech at NASA etc)
In absolutely unrelated news, @annpettifor.bsky.social's "The Global Casino" book is out tomorrow.
26.01.2026 16:15 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I am done with my interesting times now, I am good with a solid decade of boredom, thank you very much.
15.01.2026 03:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Je vis aux US.
11.01.2026 14:31 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Been driving a 2017 Bolt in the US. Best car I ever had and we live in the rural cold parts where the battery takes a nasty hit in winter.
Of course, they discontinued it...
"This paper is so good that I have decided to join the author in his research as he has clearly outshined any other endeavor in our domain"
23.12.2025 19:05 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Allow me to ask: is it the logical conclusion of the cultural mantra: "public good or common good doesn't exist, the individual reign supreme and any wealth or power acquired is inherently moral, because the individual success is always good regardless of the means used"
20.12.2025 18:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"how can someone not at least find it interesting watching a whole planet shift geological ages in the blink of an eye?"
Hear, hear!
I was in a call today with Europeans colleague. The very first topic before we could even get into the agenda: what's going on with NCAR?
18.12.2025 23:27 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Theyβre not even pretending that itβs for any kind of legitimate reason. Instead, theyβre trying to dismantle NCAR to suppress knowledge.
17.12.2025 14:12 β π 29 π 4 π¬ 3 π 0The Age of Morons is in full swing. The damage to the scientific community will be unmeasurable. I cannot count how many pieces of software we use that originated or are maintained at NCAR. Taking this burden on would literally stop dozens of teams like mine from continuing research.
17.12.2025 03:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Decades if not centuries of knowledge about to be erased... Many of those NCAR researchers will leave public research _forever_.
And how to blame them, they'll make 3x the money in any private sector needing their fluid dynamics know-how without being insulted every other week.
The Age of Morons.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.
17.12.2025 01:16 β π 1482 π 1092 π¬ 193 π 657Contractors and feds alike... My team is nearing a state of the tech where we can deploy, we were hoping to go gather feedback at AGU. Got denied. Next year? Who knows...
16.12.2025 15:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's moving up, arguably. We are running 300+ GB on a SoC in HPC grade hardware with integrated LPDDR5.
Far from consumer electronics, yes, but a step in that direction
That absolutely doesn't solve the capacity issue the AI bubble has created in RAM. It's a knock-on good side effect at best...
03.12.2025 14:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A small silver lining is that the GH/BH all on one die silicon AI chips that exists alongside the classic GPUs are pushing development of LPDDR5 for performance. Those yield good results and could be a significant step in consumer electronics if they generalize in chip architecture.
03.12.2025 14:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Unemployed engineers, but no budget to hire. Unused GPUs, but no electrical capacity or used GPUs with only a few years left in them.
We are running those 128 cores x86 for a loooooong time ;)
Giving a seminar soon on High Performance Computing for research, gotta update my slide titled "Hardware market instability: want some chips, roll a dice, maybe you get it this year, maybe you don't!"
28.11.2025 19:55 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It goes beyond that. When they are installed, they have to be tested, tuned, parts have to be replaced because of a bad switch that kills performance, code tuned, etc. It's a damn long road after the ribbon cutting to a purring HPC!
18.11.2025 22:28 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If I may, let's actualize the language: IS stripping it for parts. Present tense. NASA is being disassembled now, very much underway.
25.10.2025 11:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Our travel budget was 1$ _before_ the shutdown...
24.10.2025 21:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Well deserved, congrats!
18.10.2025 14:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thank you! I am slowly going insane seeing a vast majority of talking heads going on about something that has no proper definition!
Is AI the moment where science/tech truly becomes co-opted to become a religious cult?
It's a good way to get your badge deactivated for the entire building
