the only good thing about genAI is that it got me to really love seeing bad art, because I know a person put in time and effort, made themselves vulnerable by showing it to others, and is trying to improve. I value that more than anything now

Worrying about an eye-catching, recognizable art style is like worrying about fashion. Some people are great at coordinating it, some of us aren't. It's cool but it's of secondary importance. What really matters about your art is its PERSONALITY, which you already have by being you. That's plenty.

I always said I "never had a style" until others told me "your style is in the loving attention you give to human imperfection. Pinches in fat, knobs of bone, lines in the skin, thin hairs. Tender facial expressions and fleshy warmth." I never knew that was what people saw. But it's distinctly mine.

My best advice on developing an art style: don't force it, and don't stress over it. Draw what you like, draw how you like, try new things and keep the things that feel right. Your "style" is just little bits of yourself that shine through all your drawings and reach others. That's always enough.

What defines your "style" is little signs that it was YOU who made it. You can do different line work and shading techniques and facial stylization. But something about the way you draw hands, the shape of the eyelashes, the inclusion of freckles or neck hair, the soft colors... THAT can be enough.

I dislike the way people act like having a "style" means always drawing the same. Most artists, ESPECIALLY self-taught, love experimenting with different styles. It's good exercise. It also means your style will change over time, which is healthy and normal.

There is so much pressure to monetize your art, and a big step towards establishing yourself commercially is to develop a recognizable and consistent style to build your brand around. While it can certainly help, forcing it to happen can crush your soul. The best style is the one you enjoy the most.

My strongest advice to new artists: stop worrying about developing a distinctive style. It comes naturally over many years of experimenting with things you like. What you think is pretty and what you like to draw aren't always going to be the same thing. Try new things. Your style will make itself.

One of the slowest lessons I've learned in art: your "style" isn't about drawing with the same proportions or stylistic gimmicks every time. Your "style" is a collection of artistic traits that give away that it's YOU. Bad habits, good habits, unique decisions, bits of love that leak onto the page.

Adjacent to this; a lot of artists starting out ask about developing “style” and I think style tends to be the bag of tricks you pick up trying to become the most YOU artist.

I think most artists hit a point where they’re like, well if I can’t be the best artist, I shall be the most ME artist.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

An adventurer was more than qualified for these sorts of errands, and Ryza was confident that this delivery job would go just as smoothly. It was too simple to mess up. Just get the package from the client, and deliver it to the Academy. With the little red-and-blue parcel safely stowed in her bag, she’d probably finish the job early, hand over the goods, and collect her reward before dinner. The whole thing would be a piece of cake… once she figured out where she was going.
