Note: This is not the exact quote β€” which is weird, since it's on video and the pope said it in English.

But the exact quote conveys roughly the same meaning, and goes arguably even harder by making an apparent reference to the detention of migrants with no criminal record.

Fourteen years later, I *still* think one of the best ways for us to repudiate Cheney's legacy of torture would be to recognize and honor the courageous soldiers and public servants who exposed the torture policies and tried to end them. www.nytimes.com/2011/04/28/o...

I had thought most of my naive idealism had been stomped out of me by now, but it’s amazing to me that this level of public animosity could be directed by Democratic leadership toward a sweet and personable young candidate of their own party seemingly exclusively because of his background.

Dick Cheney was a cruel bureaucrat who made corrupt institutions more abusive. Officials in those institutions then surrendered what was left of their morals to accommodate his evil vision. In time, those institutions became even more corrupt. What politicians say today will be revealing of the rot.

People probably wouldn't celebrate the deaths of horrible people if they had been held to account for their many many many crimes while they were alive.

Here’s a list of publications I’d love to read this week on Cheney’s death or Zohran’s election.

this is such a great encapsulation of why this race feels existential even to people outside NYC. Cuomo as the final boss of everything wrong with the current Democratic Party, Mamdani happily grabbing the third rails everyone’s told are too dangerous to touch (trans people, Muslims, socialism)

If we could shift the burden of transmission and distribution maintenance to the tax base rather than the rate base solar power could finally help us achieve the aspiration of β€œtoo cheap to meter” during midday solar peaks. Anyone with a battery could extend that free energy across time.

I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

F.D.A. Drug Unit Chief Resigns, and Is Sued by Drug Company

Twists and turns all night on this story. George Tidmarsh, FDA's top drug regulator, told me he resigned because he believed he was facing retaliation.

A drug company tells a different story of revenge and alleged extortion, which Dr. Tidmarsh denies:

"Why don't people support welfare programs?"

Racism. More specifically, anti-Blackness.

White folks asked about who welfare serves overestimate the number of Black people on welfare. Not only that, but just the mere THOUGHT of who welfare supports led less white people to support it. #blacksky

If your newspaper is giving Donald Trump softer headlines and gauzier coverage than People Magazine, that should be a bit of a wake up call.

There is a book out called β€œThe Sin of Empathy,” which is written by a white Christian nationalist cult leader out in Idaho. The idea that the left is β€œweaponizing empathy against Christians” is an EXTREMELY popular & growing sentiment being bolstered by the church. And we all need to be aware of it

Obama Calls Mamdani to Praise His Campaign and Offers to Be Sounding Board

President Obama called Zohran Mamdani on Saturday β€” praising his campaign and offering to be a "sounding board" into the future.

Obama said he was invested in Mamdani's success beyond the election on Tuesday.

"Your campaign has been impressive to watch," Obama told Mamdani.

Klein is right that Dems have to win in red states and that the party should be engaging in some soul-searching right now.

But the soul-searching should begin with basic facts. Moderation *is* the current strategy and Dems are losing despite having a popular agenda. More of the same won't fix it.
