10.09.2025 18:26 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0As the green transition (or renewables capitalism, as the special issue calls it) creates new technological opportunities where incumbents hesitate, these historical insights can guide developing country strategies.
10.09.2025 11:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0By examining how technological catch-up actually occurred in these detailed cases, we counter defeatist perspectives that focus only on structural constraints of global capitalism or political economy limitationsβoffering instead an ambitious vision for what economic development can achieve.
10.09.2025 11:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Success requires 3 interconnected dynamics, which we detail for each case study.
1. Access foreign knowledge via transnational networks
2. Use knowledge for innovation while securing market demand and financing to scale production
3. Strategic government industrial policy support
We examine how developing countries can leverage (green) windows of opportunity for technological catch-up, drawing lessons from historical experiences: South Korea/Taiwan (semiconductors) and China (EVs).

Happy to share a new article published in the
Journal of Development Studies, co-authored with Tobias Wuttke and Kriengkrai Techakanont:

IPCEIs have recently emerged as a key tool in the EU's fast-growing industrial policy toolbox.
In a new paper in Competition & Change, @luukschmitz.bsky.social, @tobiaswuttke.bsky.social and I take a closer look at how this instrument works on the ground.
A short thread (link to the paper below)π
Nice @pkrugman.bsky.social blog on why the US dominates tech, and what Europe can (and cannot) learn from America. 1/

29.11.2024 15:14 β π 25 π 16 π¬ 0 π 0It isnβt. My comment was on the overall strategic decision for EU policymakers whether to support/prioritize European-owned battery firms.
22.11.2024 18:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is the question it boils down to. What value one attaches to having EU-owned battery producer(s). How likely is it that Chinese battery producers will use their market power against EU carmakers? & how much of a problem would it be? Premium EV makers can use more expensive JP/SK batteries.
22.11.2024 18:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The argument in the letter is based on a recent study, co-authored with Lindsay Whitfield: research-api.cbs.dk/ws/portalfil...
22.11.2024 15:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The FT printed my letter regarding the EU mandating tech transfer from Chinese firms. Contrary to the celebratory mood over this news, I am very sceptical.
