i'm so polarized about this. i love using LLMs and find Claude hugely helpful to learning. i love that people who couldn't program previously can now whip up solid prototypes

and at the same time the self-inflicted "to the moon"ification of impostor syndrome is leaving a gap that may not get filled

"Hermeneutical injustice" is a phrase used to describe the situation where a person has had an experience that they cannot easily make socially understood, often because no label yet exists to create a common reference point.

Anyway, apropos of nothing, here's a term my dad invented 25 years [โ€ฆ]

GPT-5: Key characteristics, pricing and model card Iโ€™ve had preview access to the new GPT-5 model family for the past two weeks, and have been using GPT-5 as my daily-driver. Itโ€™s my new favorite model. Itโ€™s still โ€ฆ

I've had preview access to GPT-5 for a couple of weeks, so I have a lot to say about it. Here's my first post, focusing just on core characteristics, pricing (it's VERY competitively priced) and interesting details from the GPT-5 system card https://simonwillison.net/2025/Aug/7/gpt-5/

figure 1 from the attached paper; basically indicates that if you time your collection well, total live data size is almost 0, which makes collection free. caption follows:

"Well-timed garbage collection can have near-zero cost. Heap composition graphs taken from
prior work, with the top-most line in each graph indicating total heap occupancy (annotated in blue).
In each case, the total heap occupancy periodically falls to zero. On the javac benchmark; if collections are
timed to occur at exactly 44 MB, 88 MB and 132 MB, there will be almost no objects live during each collection,
so the collections will have near-zero cost. The same occurs in wordpress and other PHP workloads."

iso partitions the heap into per-request (private) and global (published) parts, maintained via a write barrier. public objects are pinned during a private collection, and private objects are pinned during a global collection.

the goal is to allow private GC [โ€ฆ]

Testing the GCC-based Rust compiler(backend)

I have wrote yet another article about compiling Rust with GCC.

I go over some neat news(running the Rust compiler on M68K CPUs), important topics(eg. how we test `cg_gcc`, or ABI compatiblity), and some fun triva about cursed proc-macros.

Hope you enjoy it!

It's absurd and dystopian that payment processors get to decide what we can and can't see on the internet.

That companies like Visa and Mastercard can use their enormous size to bully companies into taking stuff offline - based on the reactionary politics of a small group.

Respectability is bullshit, if you support games, support porn games.

If you support workers, support sex workers.

If you support humans, support humans that get horny.

Puritanism is one of the greatest evils on a deeply poisoned planet.

The startup disk selection screen in macOS 26 Tahoe beta 4. One disk is selected and one is not, but it's REALLY hard to tell which is which at a glance.

Is there some kind of contest within Apple to see how little contrast can be used while still *technically* indicating a selection? One of these disks is selected, believe it or not!

This game is platforming brilliance. You take the trope of "switch between red and blue blocks" and then combine it with Donkey Kong beating the shit out of everything so that you need to carve out the platforms and walls you need to do the platforming with.
