I see grocery/takeout shaming discourse going around again, so this is your periodic historian reminder that cooking from scratch daily while working has never been sustainable, and for millennia everyone either relied on takeout & restaurants or ate in huge households w/ big dorm-like group dining.

My photo shows a Saxon disc brooch made of copper embellished with gold plates and gold wire, set with five garnets in gold bosses, four of which are arranged around a larger central boss, and a mosaic of tiny polished garnet slabs around the outer edge of the brooch, and forming a four pointed star-like geometric shape around the central boss. The brooch measures 7 cm in diameter. Excavated from a woman’s grave by AOC Archaeology in 2000. This type of brooch was a fashionable status piece amongst aristocratic Anglo-Saxon women in the AD 600s. The woman’s grave also contained glass beads and silver rings.

Ornate Saxon copper brooch intricately decorated with gold and garnets, AD 650-670.

Found in a woman’s grave during excavations in Floral Street, Covent Garden, once in the heart of ‘Lundenwic’, the early Saxon town of London.
