David Perry @lollardfish.bsky.social just gave a BRILLIANT presentation for graduate students on writing public scholarship, op-eds, etc. He’s doing a great service for the historical humanities and the dissemination of scholars’ work to the public.

This was a wonderful session and a wonderful way to remember and reflect on both Jinty and Jinty's research. Kudos to the organisers, authors and editor(s), and to the memory of Jinty Nelson.

I see grocery/takeout shaming discourse going around again, so this is your periodic historian reminder that cooking from scratch daily while working has never been sustainable, and for millennia everyone either relied on takeout & restaurants or ate in huge households w/ big dorm-like group dining.

I wouldn’t wish death on anyone but it would be hilarious if, like, a random visible body part would savagely and instantly discolor in reaction.

Obama gave us eight years of rational, thoughtful, non-corrupt (however imperfect) government at great risk to his family and we proceeded to follow him with the most venal, ignorant, and corrupt leadership possible. He owes us nothing. I’d be slow af to act too

In modern times, one of the most powerful arguments against public access to farmland is the landowner's possible liability if there is an accident. This issue is covered in some detail in Middle Irish commentary on the main law-text on accidents, Bretha Etgid. The general conclusion is that the onus is on the casual passer-by to avoid dangerous situations on farmland.

From Early Irish Farming by Fergus Kelly.

When people say β€œwe must go back” why do they always mean racism and not whatever this is

My photo shows a Saxon disc brooch made of copper embellished with gold plates and gold wire, set with five garnets in gold bosses, four of which are arranged around a larger central boss, and a mosaic of tiny polished garnet slabs around the outer edge of the brooch, and forming a four pointed star-like geometric shape around the central boss. The brooch measures 7 cm in diameter.

Excavated from a woman’s grave by AOC Archaeology in 2000. This type of brooch was a fashionable status piece amongst aristocratic Anglo-Saxon women in the AD 600s. The woman’s grave also contained glass beads and silver rings.

Ornate Saxon copper brooch intricately decorated with gold and garnets, AD 650-670.

Found in a woman’s grave during excavations in Floral Street, Covent Garden, once in the heart of β€˜Lundenwic’, the early Saxon town of London.

Guelphs and Ghibellines - Wikipedia

Hey #MedievalSky #EarlyModern history friends: can anyone explain why the English @Wikipedia page for the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict lists the date 1392 as the end of the feud? It doesn’t list any specific event/death/etc. & I can’t think of one in that year. Ideas? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guelphs...

Yes, very interesting! I often enjoy reading about Tolkien’s life outside his books and scholarly pursuits, as a parishioner or a parent or everyday English person. Also nice that he’s mostly pretty well intentioned in these activities…
