Welcome to Vox Feminae Where medieval women speak in stone, scripture, and song

I decided to start a substack to showcase small bits of the research I am working on. I am focusing on medieval women, specifically how they navigated and shaped the world around them.

Medieval homes were brighter than the Dark Ages suggest
Research undertaken at Ghent University (UGent) reveals that there was more light in people’s homes in the late Middle Ages than previously assumed. β€˜People could create enough light to work indoors even at night,’ explains archaeologist Natan HeidbΓΌchel. He travelled to heritage park Bokrijk to carry out his research that included making old skool medieval candles.

Guys that’s not what the Dark Ages means… #medievalsky

I think these kinds of explorations and analyses are vital to keep history, archaeology, mythology, etc. relevant and relatable. They can modernize Irish mythology for brand new audiences, and I think that is profoundly worthwhile.

This is in addition to my firmly held belief that games are art and have so much value when it comes to storytelling. There is also an entire YouTube channel that focuses on the archaeology of Elden Ring and the parallels with the real world.

The more I dig into the deep lore the more parallels I see. The absolutely massive piles of notes I’ve taken on this topic is probably enough to turn this topic into a book. Will I do it? Maybe…
Irish mythology doesn’t get enough love in my opinion.

I’ve been a gamer my entire life and yet no game has held my interest like Elden Ring. It truly is a masterpiece that pulls from all world mythology and legends but Irish mythology is especially prominent. As such, in true Alice form, I’ve gone down a rabbit hole regarding this.
