Other winners: cheap notebook and crayons/pencils/stickers, the tiny books and random toys from Happy Meals, sticker-by-number books, colour wonder markers, novel snacks! I split the amount of stuff in half and packed their regular school backpacks for each of them, including snacks in lunch bags.

I’ve taken my kids (currently 4 and 7) on a few long-haul flights and road trips over the past few years. I got a couple small whiteboards from the dollar store as magnetic/flat surfaces so they could draw or use magnatiles and squigz (suction cup toys).
