Federal Agents Left Behind β€œDeath Cards” After Capturing Immigrants ICE agents dropped customized ace of spades playing cards, recalling a practice by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War.

Uncalled for, beyond disgusting, sick, cruel and racist, all at the same time.

A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world

A community organizer’s guide to Signal group chats Key privacy settings and best practices.

I was interviewed for this great lil piece on how to use Signal safely and responsibly by @steviebonifield.bsky.social for @theverge.com. TLDR Signal has NOT been hacked by the FBI but public groups are *public* "Chat, if you wouldn't say it in court, don't say it in here".

Before we talk about Pittsburgh media’s future, how about some deep listening? Drawing on years of research in Pittsburgh, journalist and academic Letrell Crittenden argues the future of news in the city must center on community engagement.

There is a lot of discussion about the future of news in Pittsburgh in the wake of the Post-Gazette’s closure. Letrell Crittenden weighs in that community voices must be at the center of the evolving media landscape.

Schumer said this the morning after TX dems wiped out the reddest district in the country over the weekend... If you're feeling like that was a turn around moment for the Dems, well, ol' Sen CS really wants to make sure that it isn't. He'll find a way. Democrats don't want to win elections.

Washington Post Raid Is a Frightening Reminder: Turn Off Your Phone’s Biometrics Now The search warrant to raid a Washington Post reporter’s home shows how authorities can open your phone without your consent.

Journalists should "disable biometrics when they expect to be in a situation where they expect a possible search," @freedom.press' Martin Shelton told @theintercept.com.

Alex Pretti’s murder was an attack on press freedom Officials’ anti-recording playbook is an update of the old anti-whistleblowing one

Recording police or ICE agents "is an act of journalism, no matter who does it. If those recording are not journalists themselves, their relationship with the press is symbiotic," @freedom.press' @seth-stern.bsky.social writes.

"They’re journalists’ sources β€” even whistleblowers."

idk, all this reminds me too much of Watchmen (tv series 2019). A kind of slight of hand that would make it seem like they are doing something re: accountability, but it is actually meaningless and makes space for even more horrific behavior. These types of reforms just don't work for many reasons.

I'll be sharing a few more fundraisers from the twin cities, and once again, I am only sharing those that are vouched for by people I personally know who are on the ground.

This is a bail fund that helps people who were arrested and are facing charges.

FBI’s Washington Post Investigation Shows How Your Printer Can Snitch on You Investigators identified a suspect, Aurelio Luis Perez-Lugones, because his employer could view the contents of files printed at its facility.

An office printer was used to surveil IT contractor accused by FBI of retaining natsec info

The "employer could see not only the typical metadata stored by printers...but it could also view the actual contents of the printed materials β€” in this case...the screenshots themselves."

I need people who don’t live in the Twin Cities to stop telling people not to join massive Signal groups right now. People are doing it. They’re going to keep doing it. Give them good advice about it.

The actually practical advice is don’t say anything to 1000 strangers you wouldn’t say in public
