We have the nation's highest child care costs, and everyday essentials like groceries and meals out just keep rising. Most urgently, Cambridge has some of the highest rents and home prices in the entire country. Families who have lived here for generations are being pushed out. Young people raised in Cambridge often cannot imagine staying. Even middle-class families with good jobs are barely hanging on. This is not just bad luck. It is the result of decades of discriminatory and exclusionary polley choices that made it nearly impossible to build housing. Until recently, 85 percent of existing Cambridge homes were illegal to build under our zoning laws. Triple-deckers, small apartments, modest multi-family homes-the buildings that once kept Cambridge affordable and diverse-were outlawed by our own rules. Meanwhile, Cambridge has still not reached the population we had back in 1950. Yet currently, even if no new people wanted to move here, the children born in Cambridge today would not have a place to live once they grew up. A city that pushes out its own next generation is not a sustainable city.

We have a choice. We can continue with the status quo, watching prices rise higher and neighbors leave. Or we can say yes to providing needed housing. Yes to homes that working families can afford. Yes to apartments for young people starting out. Yes to a Cambridge that grows while staying true to its values of fairness and inclusion. Growth will bring challenges. Construction can be noisy. Traffic and parking need to be managed. But those are problems we can solve. The alternative is far worse: empty classrooms, closed storefronts, friends and family forced to move away, and a city where only the wealthy can stay. This election is about building a Cambridge where everyone-families, students, seniors, and the next generation-has a place to call home. That is the future we are fighting for. Turns out a lot of people don't even know there is an election coming up. Today we met Patrick, who literally lives under a rock. He was really excited about our plans to make dignified housing affordable for all!
