"if the government subsidises something it means it is not working". Examples: electric vehicles and health care. What about $31 billion in US government subsidies to the oil and gas industry? Hhhmmm. Hypocrite.

Can we find out: a) who at Dalhousie hired these consultants? b) how much Dalhousie is paying them? c) what have been their recommendations to senior management and Dal board?

Just to clear the air a little.

Yes. Correct analysis. The lack of data, and the lack of plans to invest in data collection is quite astonishing given the level of political discussion. Don't trust consultant reports that are based on little to no data.

So destructive. Can't write proposals, can't bring in funds to the University. Can't prepare classes. Can't advise students. What happens when you have a Board of Governors full of Corporate CEOs, CFO, COOs, VPs, CPAs and managers: none with any expertise in the core business of a University.

The reputational risk to #Dalhousie University from its misguided and ill-considered lockout of Faculty is massive. A glance at the Board makeup, mainly corporate types, makes me worry they may have no idea what makes a successful University, what Faculty do, and why.

Who would want to start working for #NOAA under the current regime? How do you replace 32 years of experience overnight?

Head of local weather warnings takes early retirement as NOAA cuts continue Yura has over 32 years experience, spending more than half of his career at the NWS Austin/San Antonio office.

Convenient for Republicans to say "don't politicise tragedy". But this article from April about experienced #NWS early warning manager from San Antonio, #Texas forced into early retirement by #chainsaw cuts to #NOAA demands accountability in the face of the #flood tragedy. tinyurl.com/yyhxveef

75% of US scientists who answered Nature poll consider leaving More than 1,600 readers answered our poll; many said they were looking for jobs in Europe and Canada.

We polled Nature readers to ask if they were thinking of leaving the US for jobs abroad. Three-quarters of them (who said they were US-based scientists) said yes. πŸ§ͺ

Agreed these mechanisms are addressed. But the big one, metabolism/ respiration, is usually not mentioned. Simply put: whales eat a lot of "ocean carbon": they have to, it's their function. But most of this carbon goes straight into the atmosphere. It seems to be a blind spot. Don't understand why.

Has everyone forgotten their basic biology? Whales, contrary to sharks and fish, eat carbon in the ocean, metabolise it to move and stay warm, and then pump it into the atmosphere. The carbon goes the wrong way!!
Whales are really great but not for reducing atmospheric CO2πŸ˜‚πŸ§ͺ

More details are coming out that many of those whisked away to El Salvador did not have criminal records, and do not appear to have been part of a gang of any sort:
