Ah, their install script tries to create and mount a swapfile if you have < 2 GiB RAM, maybe that's why? Though they could totally wrap that with sudo(1) if they wanted to.

Maybe it's because their default recommendation is DigitalOcean, which drops you directly into a root shell? But they also include a bunch of sudo'ing in their instructions. It's weird.

(Also DigitalOcean appears to be completely unwilling to allowlist outbound TCP/587 for anyone anymore so […]

@ai6yr I mean, sure, I use root to install docker at the system level, but then I can interact with docker just fine as non-root. I do that on this here Mastodon server's VM.

I guess I'll just try doing it as non-root and worst case have to pivot back to root.
