The path those Wolof speakers were forced to take that led them to Washington’s army was no doubt utter misery. Such is the nature of our history. But they were there and they helped.

TIL that there were Wolof speakers in General George Washington’s Continental Army at Valley Forge. As an erstwhile resident of West Africa with Senegal amongst my previous diplomatic portfolios, I am delighted.

That and another tragedy is that one side also has a hate-filled racist ideology and they get really angry when that is pointed out to them. (“I’m not racist you’re racist.”) Maybe that just brings it back to your point.

Let me tell you, that’s a weird feeling you never forget. A landmark that seemed permanent disintegrates along with thousands of people and you can’t go home.

24 years ago I was in Paris, on the phone with my mom in Pennsylvania trying to process the news that the twin towers “aren’t there anymore” and that if I needed to get home at that moment, I couldn’t because all air traffic had been indefinitely stopped.

This is the the built-in hypocrisy of the abuser who always sees themselves as the victim. Kirk, the right, the GOP, these people have lost their way while claiming to be the one and only way. I don’t know how we get out of this without a whole lot more ugliness.

But of course zillions of people are pointing this kind of thing out much more pithily this morning.

And b) Kirk wasn’t careful about what *he* said.

And I just wanted to tell him, a) Kirk was kind to *you* dude. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough by itself to make him a kind person.

I heard an interview this morning with a young man who considered Charlie Kirk a mentor and friend and who is just devastated today etc. the guy said Kirk was the kindest person (!) and that “people” really need to be more careful about the things they say. 🧵

Once again, I want to give Michel Martin a standing ovation for her interview this morning of Matt Schlapp and not letting him getting away with castigating NPR and perceived “enemies” of the right without acknowledging his, CPAC’s, and the right’s own role in inflammatory speech.
