You know that if any Democrat (especially a woman) did this, there would be a thundering chorus that it was snobby and elite. It’s funny how dumb people like to use props they know are associated with smart people. Meanwhile smarties are eternally told to hide their full intellect in public.

I wonder how long into the conservative project of Making Academia White and Male Again we’ll have to go before magically college education is valued and we stop talking about trades as an important alternate path.

So like Elizabeth Warren creating a new agency to fight banking scams, Biden announcing a crackdown on junk fees, having an FTC chair that called BS on a whole raft of things ….

Also given how badly the conservatives are citing history, it doesn’t seem like they are really paying all that much attention.

I think this will also be a clarifying moment for education. The goal in a civic education should be not to support lifelong learning, but enough of a β€œreal world model” to ignore the fakes. For example, knowing history not as a list of wars and dates but actual social movements.

I’m not entirely sure why we are looking to corporate owners and managers to stand up to this government. I mean, it’s not like the administration is trying to stop them from stealing the productivity of workers or helping workers or anything like that. The disdain for commoners is mutual.

Has anyone thrown out design concepts for, I dunno, just tripling the pedestrian bridge density in the area to make it easier to cross the Connector?

Why a NASA satellite that scientists and farmers rely on may be destroyed on purpose The Trump administration has asked NASA staffers to draw up plans to end at least two satellite missions that measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to current and former NASA employees.

It is worth pointing out that premature deorbiting of a NASA satellite without Congressional approval is tantamount to illegally destroying the property of the American people. Thoughts @altspaceforce.altgov.info ?

It’s amazing how much ink I can see on the capital cost of the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel and how little I see about follow on year maintenance. But that’s probably about the best answer to the question.

The other problem is that I’ve become deeply convinced that quality is a team sport. You can’t genius your way to a consistent build with all the kinks worked out. You need to take all contributions from the floor and make improvements locally. And then there’s no more Great Man to lavish $$ on.

Since Kamala is releasing the book of the campaign I’m sure we’ll get to retread a lot of old ground. But maybe here’s a slightly new patch. We heard so often neither she nor Hillary had a β€œreal” reason to be President. What about The Donald? Why didn’t we hear all the time he only wanted revenge?

It’s like the thing about sending Starship to Mars. There’s a certain fanboy contingent that has so fetishized the hardware and tech that they can’t notice there’s going to be no mission nor anyone to perform it. To be fair, a lot of industry coverage suffers from the same myopia.

The moment they allowed impoundment, they wrote themselves out of a job. Duffy needs to appear at hearings and the local police need to be alerted so he can brought into contempt for the inevitable lying he will do to Congress.

Each day, a different member of the Democratic House caucus needs to get to a camera and say β€œI want to bring X priority to the House floor but we’re in recess to protect Trump from the Epstein files.” X is whatever is personally important to the member, no focus groups needed.

Say the thing that the Republicans are doing to get the pain: closing hospitals across the state, driving people out of their healthcare support, and forcing those remaining to deal with a bureaucracy that is intentionally being worsened so people walk away from benefits they are eligible for.

Reporting events as they happen is also a contributor. Reporting is necessary raw information, truly. But come election time there needs to be packaging more like intelligence briefings given to big decision makers. A section dedicated to candidates’ grasp on reality would also be helpful.

As you have noted in your own thread, the big technologies are usually developed generationally by a variety of researchers making small adds patiently until the knowledge base hits a critical mass. The closest agent you can find to acknowledge in this is the institution.

But also so generic a utility that Microsoft completely obliterated the market share just by a distribution advantage. So aside from the money, what part of Marc’s experience gives us a reason to listen to a damn thing he says? /2

Let’s also remember what the great Andreesen invention was. It wasn’t rocketry, nuclear power, electricity, the spreadsheet, deep principles of computing or operation or the like. It was a web browser. Perfectly serviceable piece of technology, useful bit of kit. /1

Now of course when I say that, note that technical industries have a habit of alternatively crying about labor shortages and engaging in mass layoffs.

I’m curious what the response would be if it was pointed out that all the MAGA boys needed to succeed was just buckle down and learn a little more math. I think I was one of like 3 or 4 US students in one of my graduate control theory classes? Out of about 20 or so?

Blue states wanted a better world so they were willing to include the red states in building it. But those driving politics in red states were made existentially angry by extending basic nickname courtesy to pronouns and so they are ready to set it all aflame.
