Most universities in the U.S. are facing similar, if not larger, deficits as a result of the so-called "demographic cliff": lower birth rates during the Great Recession = far fewer students going to college. COVID, inflation, and now federal and state cuts have only made it worse.

Waze (owned by Google) and Bing Maps also changed the name. I just switched to HERE WeGo, which is based in Eindhoven (Netherlands), and so far I'm happy with it. I think it's time that we started taking our business elsewhere. Money is the only language that Silicon Valley speaks.

For those of you frustrated by the Gulf of Mexico change in Google/Apple/Bing Maps, Waze (owned by Google), and probably others to come, then consider giving HERE WeGo a try. The company is based in Eindhoven, and I'd love to send the Dutch a little love for holding the line...for now.

And Apple Maps is now the latest to support the whims of a petty dictatorship, so HERE WeGo, which is based in Eindhoven, is now my mapping app of choice. I'll go back to using hardcopy paper maps if I have to.

Goodbye, Google Maps and Waze (which was acquired by Google in 2013). At the moment, Apple Maps is still using Gulf of Mexico, so it's now my current default.
