The consequence of the failed talks is devastating, as it leaves no clear path for nations to collectively address the mountains of plastic that are filling landfills, clogging oceans and showing up in chunks on beaches and other public places.

I see a hopeful glimmer in this pro-Canada pushback, but can we agree that bad-ass lumberjacks with hearts of gold is an identity worth fighting for?? And yes, illuminating injustices in Canada (particularly Indigenous) was a catalyst for this type of politics.

Honestly, Canada is a little late to the game for "identity politics"- typical, we're always behind the US in those insidious cultural ways. For so long, our identity was "at least we're nicer than Americans" -- but finally we're buying into divide/conquer politics. Yay.

It's a shared moment in time that all Canadians can relate to, and it's very, very dangerous to forget the little things that used to give us hope!!! Looking at some of the other comments on this thread gave me chills! But I feel better now, so thanks for engaging!

It was a spark that started a fire for some activists. Residential school exhumations may never have happened, MB has an Indigenous premier.. I agree that anger at the system is the right move here lol But be careful- just because it didn't change YOUR life doesn't mean it didn't change lives.

Correct, the emotional healing it brought about did not heal the broken and intentionally oppressive politics!! Totally agree. And the systems suck, all of them, on purpose. But the emotional feelings of the time weren't nothing. The learning we did wasn't nothing.

One hope is that some people have been cultivating ideas for a long time. Mutual aid, community gardens, etc. The sad thing is the politics are designed to squash stuff that works. It might need to burn before new growth is possible. Sending respect and good wishes.

I'm not sure about that. As a country, we touted "niceness" and never recognized atrocities against Indigenous. Trudeau did that for us, and despite other flaws, that was a healing thing for all Canadians

Thank you, that's helpful. Some folks have been pushing back on oppression for a long time, maybe I've forgotten what it feels like early on. But it's scary because it took me YEARS to get out of the "well, fuck, look at that!" Phase and into the action phase. I hope the timeline speeds up.
