She slumped forward, arms draped over the gelding’s neck, groaning like she’d been mortally wounded. “My feet are destroyed,” she said. “Utterly betrayed by my own legs.” Mirva barely looked up from where she was nudging the mule along. “I told you so. And no, you’re not riding Squibbles .” “But Squibbles loves me.” “Squibbles tolerates you.” “Fine, I concede,” Anni muttered. “You were right.” Mirva gave her a pleased smile, the kind that came with ribbons and old victories. “I usually am.” I glanced over. “Wait—he’s called Squibbles?” Anni grinned, eyes half-lidded from the saddle. “It’s to remind my mother of my father during her travels.” That got a laugh out of me, full and sudden. “That’s cruel.” “And accurate,” Mirva said, entirely unfazed.
