there’s a well-known econometric identification problem here though. if trend is shifting down consistently, but the cycle adds ups and downs, it’s possible that the “ups” of the cycle cancel out the trend just-so, creating the illusion of plateaus. can’t distinguish the two from time series alone

i made something like that once. iirc had to futz a bit to get the various fonts and alignments right, but it was not a major challenge. v nice plot btw :)

i would be curious to read a post with nice examples of the edge cases; figures that are very hard to make in gg but trivial in base and vice versa. one thing i remember struggling with in ggplot was aesthetics that depend in complex ways on axis variable values

tbc i didn’t mean to imply there is an insurmountable limitation to base plot’s API. mostly just beating back at apoorva’s labor theory of value, and proselytizing for grammar of graphics which i do believe is flexible. if he’d advocated tinyplot in the OP i would’ve have stayed silent :)

idk, i find it more flexible too, and ive made some pretty “out there” plots. it’s true that sometimes you have to pivot to long to make things run smooth. i know some people who abhor reshaping, so in that sense ymmv

the way to justify base plot would be to say: subsetting, faceting, color scales, are overused in dataviz, and it’s good that base makes them hard. like how people like Keynote because it makes tex harder. but the friction is real
