One of things I have noticed in the last 6 months or so of using Linux is that it's recaptured some of that joy of learning and experimenting with computers that I've not felt since the late 90s / early 2000s.

The volunteers at ScummVM do all the hard work to get this working, making it commercially viable, and like magic it stops being being abandonware…

It's called Star Quest 1 in the 27th Century and even if PC Gamer calls it classic (maybe in the UK?), I've never heard of it before today!

Please leave my backlog of games and books alone, I'll get round to them when I have time...

That is at least voluntary for those that want/can to contribute.

Maybe I'm being optimistic, but it could be helping keep the prices of the games in the program down and, longer term, funding their commitment to keep the games working on whatever hardware/OSs we have then.

I do agree that preservation needs to be more than "works on Windows 10/11" though.

My frustration is that many of their games don't work on their native OSs, and I do question if that is actually preservation?

I look at preservation as a collaborative effort.

Museums tend to deal with the "raw materials", developers (usually volunteers) build the tools, and companies like GOG make games available to people. It's all actual work, but GOG choose to cover their overheads as a business.

There's no point training people to use tools that can't answer the questions people are asking.

Train people to answer the questions themselves instead. It'll be more cost-effective and will actually empower people in the process.

'Official' game preservation efforts are good and should be encouraged when they happen. But that's still relying on corporations and the absurdly rich to care about the history of art and the medium. For the most part, that's not going to happen.

Better to spend energy on teaching ethical piracy.

A so called “comms director” who fundamentally misunderstands how social media works. People listening to their rivals are not there to have their minds changed, people listening to them will, likewise, not suddenly start listening to their rivals.

Dell PCs and laptops tend to be the better ones for Linux compatibility. So, let’s have a Linux Alienware to counter this AI nonsense.

Oh, cool! Game preservation people have managed to recover a full install of Battletech 3025 - a defunct multiplayer mech shooter.

Efforts are currently in progress to reverse-engineer a server framework and get that up and running, bringing it back to life.
