There's a games-must-be-fun element here, like "you make your own fun" works sometimes, but just making you hit your head against a wall over and over because some game dev wanker has decided that's "gameplay that's rewarding when you succeed" can not qualify if I don't care about the game yet

and I'm just like "what's my motivation here" and the game has no answer and I immediately stop playing

not just a whole storyline worth of lore -- which would be largely set dressing à la elder scrolls -- a whole storyline worth of world trivia that you need to understand to make progress in the game and understand what is happening

and open world games where there is no point but what you bring and I am immediately invested and I can play nearly forever

like they wanted to make a linear story game but weren't allowed, so they removed the story but they kept a whole storyline worth of lore and then some and just drop you in the world somewhere without a point --

For a long time I've been trying to figure out if there's a difference between a dark souls, which I can't abide -- it seems like somebody made an open world game out of spite,

like there is an actually good "slightly boring" open world game hiding in there, and actually it's not hiding at all, it's quite obvious where to cut to free it

absolutely batshit storyline that makes you frown really a lot told mostly with cutscenes, and like weird highly annoying horror game elements randomly sprinkled around

LRP: I don't know if this only applies to people who are fans of long distance west coast hiking (videos) but taking the "slightly boring open world" context to death stranding hits very weird, a very obvious open world hiking game hiding in the tiny spaces in between

I like this take. Because yeah, this is also why Death Stranding worked (and why adding more "content" to it would make it worse- the idea that was a void that needed filling was a tremendous misunderstanding)

Like, the whole constitution is organized into sections by what office or legislative body they have to do with -- most of the details of how impeachment works are in the sections on the house of representatives and the senate in Article 1, because it sets out how the parts they deal with work
