During the diamond jubilee of the IOL invention in 2009 David Spalton shared with JCRS the theatre records showing a 46 year old nurse Emily Attfield as the world’s first person to receive an #IOL she had an ECCE on 29 Nov 1949 followed by IOL implantation on 8 Feb 1950. 1/2

Actually 29 November 1949 was the day of the extracapsular cataract extraction of the first person who received the world’s first IOL implant, which took place on the 8th of February 1950. At that time it was a much longer two stage procedure so both dates are significant.
