Such positioning is common: calls for condemnation framed as if silence equals guilt. Many see it as collective blame or collective responsibility attribution trying to hold someone accountable for what is clearly an individual act against another individual’s home. 2/3

The three achieved more diplomatically than the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Perhaps he should reimburse NZ for funds wasted on his UN trip last month, so those resources cover their return flights. After all, they had their own transport until unlawfully detained by another government.

Morally that may be true, but legally it isn’t. In NZ, once a young person reaches the age of legal capacity for those rights , parental responsibility ends unless they lack capacity and then wouldn’t be entitled to those rights listed.

I hear the pain in what you’ve shared, and I don’t dismiss that. My post was only about the legal question of whether 18–19 year olds should still be their parents’ responsibility when they already hold full adult rights in the areas I listed. That’s the tension I was pointing to.

I’ve been thinking the same, and honestly, given the challenges she’s faced, it’s far more understandable. This matter deserves caution, care, and privacy, rather than being thrown into the headlines.

I'd say more like negligent (at best) rather than naive because some of us have been jumping up and down, waving flags on this for years... I know I've raised it for a decade... oh and yeah in hands of very few, placing more power and resources with these guys than most countries have.

Absolutely not. If kids are able to make their own voting choices, serve on a jury, buy alcohol, give sexual consent, marry without parental consent, and leave school, they are not the parents' legal responsibility. Seem to be taking two sets of indviduals rights the 18 year old and the parents.

Regarding loss of life and shortened life expectancies, I have seen first hand the impact when people don't listen and I get it. But I also realise that we must continue to try to influence and one tool is using our public voice.

Human nature is constant. If something worked in the past, it can again. 1970s setup of ACC in NZ after public frustration, a Commission, and govt eventually responded. Persistence can prevail over capital and people-centred systems possible when public will is strong enough. Never give up.

Force majeure events like Covid tend to throw people’s whole line of thinking into chaos--unpredictable at best in those situations, I think.

Public opinion has never changed powerful systems instantly. Apartheid movement well over 40 years, but picked up momentum...momentum is building. But to make it quick, you cannot rely on public opinion alone.

I don't think public opinion is dead. It might not shift parliament straight away, but it still creates conversations and pressure around leaders. A consistent public voice is capable of building power over time, but we have to use multiple channels and a layered approach. Thoughts from a stalwart.
