So much for 'translator's invisibility.'๐Ÿ˜„5 out of 34 reviews gave clear thumbups to my work on a game. Itโ€™s been a while since I had full rein on a narrative-heavy game's Chinese script, and it feels great to know I did something right (again).

Apart from that, there're also situations that we are all too familiar and most non-source languages face, where localization is excluded from the planning of development so that it's an afterthought or ad-on, so devs need to revisit codes or time planning to squeeze time for loc... 2/4

Things definitley have bee improved a lot! However, improvements have been not quite equal across languages and cultures, like it's not uncommon to see insufficient i18n support for non-latin alphabets/writing systems, different date and numerical formats and such. 1/4

I feel it could change a lot for better for devs, linguists, users and everyone, in terms of technicality, budgeting, time and process planning, if localization is seen as a part of development, when it can be considered much earlier during development

Just read a player comment on one game I handled, saying that "the Chinese localization reads more natural than writings in even some 'so called' Chinese-made games", and it got quite a few likes. It's a bit of "downward comparison", though I was still happy to see it.

Translation is all about conveying meaning from one language to another. But what do we do when weโ€™re struggling with how to render that meaning in our target language?

Letโ€™s talk about deverbalization, functionalism, and examples from SUBREDDITNAME and the Beings from Strange Planet!
