The Cambridge Police (still exclusively on X, naturally) are furiously spinning this debacle. After hours of antagonizing community members, they teargassed a low-income apartment building with NO WARNING. An elderly resident & a baby were sent to the hospital, and dozens suffered while CPD watched.

Healey’s office referred to a press scrum on Wednesday where she addressed Orellana’s arrest in Framingham, saying she “hadn’t heard about” the case. “We continue to monitor things,” she said. “I’ve said at the outset that we’re not a sanctuary state, therefore if people have been convicted of crimes, charged with crimes, and they’re not here lawfully, then they’re subject to action by ICE.”

ICE is kidnapping people off the streets of our state and this is the response from Governor Healey? Come on.

I am writing to demand action against ICE’s alarming and unlawful targeting of students and scholars in Massachusetts, including the recent detention of Fulbright scholar Rumeysa Ozturk. These arrests — carried out by masked agents in plain clothes — are acts of political intimidation meant to silence dissent, deter international students, and punish our communities. I urge you to take immediate steps to ensure that no local law enforcement resources aid ICE’s unconstitutional actions.
