L Break Into Program

Busy day today. Ran errands for Mrs B and the youngest. A longer session at the gym for the benefit of body and soul. Posted the first draft of my CV onto a jobs website. Updated my LinkedIn profile for what that's worth. Thankfully as a home worker it's not been too much of a shock to the system.

The system I was working on is being retired, though I suspect this is more a cost-cutting exercise than anything. There are a handful of folk there I'll keep in touch with.

Enough, plus some savings and Mrs B's income.

Yeah, it looks like the reference design chipset lends itself to that level of compatibility.

I implemented a barcode system in a warehouse we were setting up for manufacturing digital advertising panels. It was by a company called WASP. We also had a barcode printer and stock management software. It just worked. Very reliable technology. Quite cool scanning random barcodes too.

I don’t know enough about either to comment accurately. I believe they’re both based off a reference design from Motorola, and as such share many similarities.

Neither did I until a fortnight ago. It does suck yet I can’t get bitter about it. A change will be welcomed though I’d rather have done it on my terms. Just glad I don’t live for my job. Plenty to keep me occupied until I land back on my feet.

I think they are close cousins for sure. Funnily enough it’s the extra circuitry that stretches the reference design’s NTSC signal to make it PALish that’s causing me issues.

I had a massive crush on her in Just Good Friends. I’d have been 14 at the time.

They are pretty cool imho.

On the plus side I suppose I’ve got more time to debug that cursed Dragon 32.

As for what’s next. I fancy going back to doing embedded programming. I think that’s what I enjoy doing most.

...I've said my goodbyes and swapped details with a couple of colleagues I'd like to keep in touch with. I felt sad when I was first told, having been there over 8 years it's been a big part of my life. I'd have retired given a few more years. Yet one door closes, another door opens, etc.

Had a stressful couple of weeks going through a redundancy process at ${dayJob}. Outcome is that my role is redundant, and today is my last day. I'm being philosophical about this; it could be a lot worse, having had friends and family over the last year suffer from various losses and ailments...

I did make a start on this, picking up from notes I made when I last looked at this. I'm half-way through tracing the clock signal to the 6847 via some convoluted logic on the board.

Ha! Easily done. You are right though - exposure to lots of different architectures does give one more experience in programming at a low level. I did Z80, 6502, 6809, 68K and x86 before moving onto C. And there were plenty more unusual chips available. It seems to be mostly ARM and x86 these days.

It's also an excellent conversation starter.

Yeah, though Z80 is little-endian too. I switched to 68000 after Z80; loved the orthogonal instruction set, wasn't too sure about the big-endianness.
