The #Dodgers farm system improved at the trade deadline; should you be disappointed?

My favorite overall deadline move would probably be the May trade, with the Feduccia one being a close second. Both value plays that I wouldn’t have expected to be possible

The reason they stayed conservative is that there’s also a world where everyone is healthy and some of their stars who haven’t looked like themselves turn things around. And I don’t think that world, or something close to it, is very far fetched

Lack of aggression as a buyer is certainly a risk. There is absolutely a world where heading into October the Dodgers wish they aimed higher at the deadline.
But they’ve shown this is how they operate. They only take calculated risks, and today they stayed fairly conservative.

You don’t win the deadline by improving your farm system unless you’re a seller, so the Dodgers did not win this deadline. They won’t grab headlines either. But they made some damn good moves that have a good chance to look like wins moving into the future

The Dodger farm system right now is the same or better than it was two days ago. Not what I expected. But the Dodgers accomplished that while also filling the most necessary gaps on the big league roster (though not shooting for the stars)
This was the trademark Dodger deadline

If the Dodgers get/stay healthy, their roster is the best in baseball. If their superstars aren’t on the field or don’t perform anywhere near their ability, there weren’t any deadline acquisitions that would offset that. They are betting on the stars they already have to win.

The Dodgers needed help in the form of relief that could get right-handed batters out. Brock Stewart is exactly that
Righties this season are batting just .104/.178/.149 against him with a 40% strikeout rate. It’s an add that fits the needs of this bullpen extremely well

• Feduccia -> Rortvedt is not a huge difference in value to the org given Rortvedt doesn’t need a 40-man spot now
• Serwinowski could take off and become a legit starting pitching prospect (or not but worth the flyer for sure)
• Gervase is good depth relief w/ chance to grow

So basically the Dodgers got ahead of this move and picked up some solid value in return. If you asked me before this move what the Dodgers could’ve gotten purely from shopping Feduccia by himself, I would not have said a 3-for-1 with a couple intriguing arms and his replacement

Hunter Feduccia was probably going to be moved this offseason anyway if Rushing was sticking around. The 40-man roster always becomes such a crunch that keeping three catchers in the offseason would’ve been tough, especially given Feduccia’s age and lack of a path to playing time

Nothing’s ever a guarantee at the deadline and all that but this is just what came to my mind with Feduccia moving

Even though they got another catcher, the Dodgers trading away Hunter Feduccia signals to me that Dalton Rushing isn’t going anywhere. Feduccia was already comfortable with the organization & worked well with Dodger pitchers. He would’ve been the better backup catcher replacement

I like this move for the Dodgers. Feduccia wasn’t going to be in a place to be in the majors as long as Smith & Rushing are around. Moving him is fine, and they got back a good southpaw SP prospect, a big strikeout depth reliever and a replacement depth catcher. Thumbs up from me

It’s also possible that they want Sheehan to get another MiLB outing or two to make some additional tweaks. He was brought up off the IL quicker than I thought they’d move his rehab along. But if he remains down in Triple-A, I’d look at it as a practical resumption of rehab more than anything

Sending Sheehan down instead of Wrobleski could just be an on-paper move for now since Sheehan had all five options remaining while Wrobleski has already been optioned a few times this year
