Charlotte shuddered. She hated shots, but she hated the idea of Ruby being in the hospital even more.

One day after school, Charlotte’s mother came home looking more worried than ever. “They just passed another law,” she said, sinking into a chair. “Some people aren’t allowed to protest anymore.”

Rumors flew that she had been taken to the hospital. "It’s because people stopped getting vaccinated," her older brother, Lucas, explained at dinner. "There used to be laws about it, but now some states changed the rules. And now look—measles everywhere."

Meanwhile, the town was abuzz with another problem: measles. Signs were taped to the school doors, warning students to wash their hands and stay home if they felt sick. Charlotte’s friend, Ruby, had been absent all week.
