You really should. Fans of Detectorists and Small Prophets would definitely like it.

I'd never managed to read it before she read it to me. She's amazing - those nested narratives must be a total pain to narrate, and they made perfect sense in her reading.

An extract from Muriel Spark's "The Girls of Slender Means":
"Bernard Shaw had in fact proved disappointing. He had sent a type-written postcard:

Thank you for your letter in praise of my writings. As you say they have consoled you in your misfortunes I shall not attempt to gild the lily by my personal comments. As you say you desire no money I shall not press upon you my holograph signature which has some cash value. G.B.S.

The initials, too, had been typed."

Ha, I'm currently reading The Girls of Slender Means (Muriel Spark) in which a character works in publishing & has a sideline writing subtle begging letters to authors, then selling on the signatures.

For Bridgerton fans - this is the letter-head of my local orthodontic practice

Oh, and Jo Shapcott the poet, and a former head of St John's College Cambridge. Not bad for a very ordinary comprehensive that used to be a technical grammar school.

Claire Skinner, actor who played the mum in Outnumbered. And a footballer I haven't heard of.

I'll miss the main episodes but look forward to the Locklisteds and the new stuff. A question, prompted by listening to an old episode recently: when and why was a keyboard track introduced to the theme music?

South Riding by Winifred Holtby - like Middlemarch but set in the 30s, lots of local government committees, some of the women have agency, and it's 500 pages but I wished it was longer as I wanted to get to know some of the characters better.

I went back to the South Riding episode this morning, as I've just finished reading it. Just the level of enthusiasm for the novel of local government that I needed.

The main reason why my orchestra doesn't do much new stuff is the cost of hiring the music, sadly. Out of copyright music is so much cheaper. We have a loyal audience who would come along with us if we programmed more new music.

For a while, whenever I went to the doctor's my record would ping up that I might need an MMR booster. I got all my jabs on schedule as a kid - there was a measles jab when I was born (78) and I assume it was given routinely but haven't been able to find out for certain.

It certainly stopped in Preston a few years back. My husband, son and I had three beds in two adjoining rooms and were to be joined by a Mystery Person at Preston. It took ages to find out whether said person was a man or woman and thus who should occupy which bunk.

Oh wow, I didn't know about this! The viola Elegy uses similar harmonic language. *Goes to search for sheet music*

What, they don't do comps for programme note writers? That's a shame 😥

I totally would. I don't think the 0% version existed when the recipe was published and I reckon it's included for taste not alcohol

I really hope they get some privacy/alone time. If they're really around one another constantly as the editing makes it appear, that would drive me bonkers
