13.02.2026 18:54 — 👍 1 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0An extract from Muriel Spark's "The Girls of Slender Means": "Bernard Shaw had in fact proved disappointing. He had sent a type-written postcard: Thank you for your letter in praise of my writings. As you say they have consoled you in your misfortunes I shall not attempt to gild the lily by my personal comments. As you say you desire no money I shall not press upon you my holograph signature which has some cash value. G.B.S. The initials, too, had been typed."
Ha, I'm currently reading The Girls of Slender Means (Muriel Spark) in which a character works in publishing & has a sideline writing subtle begging letters to authors, then selling on the signatures.

30.01.2026 09:39 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I went back to the South Riding episode this morning, as I've just finished reading it. Just the level of enthusiasm for the novel of local government that I needed.

28.01.2026 14:48 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The main reason why my orchestra doesn't do much new stuff is the cost of hiring the music, sadly. Out of copyright music is so much cheaper. We have a loyal audience who would come along with us if we programmed more new music.

It took ages to find out whether said person was a man or woman and thus who should occupy which bunk.
