Three new followers in the previous month, then 20 in the past 24 hours... I'm not sure where you've all come from but hello 👋👋

Still sore about the Hopper exhibition at Tate Modern, many years ago - it was mostly sold out but they happily sold me a full-price ticket timed for 1 hour before closing on the last day. The exhibition included a 50-minute video.

Waiting for a delivery this morning. Delivery driver is called Igor. Terry Pratchett has a lot to answer for (but I will exercise self-control and not address him in the way my brain is tempted to)

That's my favourite descriptor on the Beaufort scale, just a shame it has such nasty real-world implications.

The main connotation of that word for me (and possibly only me) is the version of Just One of Those Things by the I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again team. "A trip to the MOON, on gossamer wings..."

Once the resident 12-year-old is through the meat-and-two-veg phase that's the kind of meal I'd like to eat a lot!

Looking for recommendations for a hotel in central Berlin, near public transport (we're going by train). Doesn't have to be super-cheap, but super-fancy would be wasted on me and the 12-year-old. We like good breakfasts.

Hello! Your wonderful skill with birthdays has made it through the Tw*tter exodus intact I see - thank you! Difficult times at present mean my birthday was low-key this year, but there was cake, and fish & chips.

Just listening to Medusa and I'm afraid the music is too good this week - I've just listened to Isle of the Dead, and I'll have to play the pod again so I can listen to what you're saying this time!

In the "Find 50" book of butterflies I had in the 80s (points were allocated to different types of butterfly you might find in the UK), that one was worth a lot of points!

There must be somewhere in central Brum that sells better ones... Or they could commit to making them!

I'm tired, and scrolling when I should be going to bed, and initially read the name as Steve Reich. Which made the rest of the para quite the trip!

I went to a new viola teacher when I was 20 - I rang him to discuss the first lesson and he said "you can bring me anything except Reger"

So good, thank you and please don't let it kill you. One thing I've wondered about Podyssey - do you use lots of (fabulous) old recordings for copyright reasons or because that's what your tastes suggest?

Perhaps I ought to do a LinkedIn post on "what being widowed taught me about marketing strategy" or similar, but I can't quite see my way to it

And hello - not sure of the etiquette of these things but I have been absent for some time, because I've recently been widowed. Rethinking things in general, which may include my translation work.

Offered two jobs by two project managers at the same organisation today. One for a quarter of my minimum rate, and one for my full rate + rush enhancement. The heat must have got to them.

My cat is usually sprawled on some tiles or other, or under a tree, in this weather. Today, however, she's decided my lap is the place to be. Just googled and found that cat body temperature is 2 degrees higher than humans'.

That's what I did with Russian - online courses from City Lit, with Duolingo as daily practice. I wouldn't have got far with Duo alone. Now I'm on Russian hiatus I'm doing Italian on Duo, which is fine as I know French.

People work and do art and politics in Middlemarch! Casaubon's work is futile and Brooke's is self-serving but Lydgate could do genuine good (but is thwarted) as could Dorothea.

Frightening or not, it's surely basic safeguarding to make sure you know who is picking the kid up

Was amused (with hindsight) that you'd mentioned "editing" in the first few sentences - this was fun and a sobering take on what's going on, but I think I'll read them in future

I did it via a photo and was afraid it would tell me how old I actually look... (It didn't)

Once again, if you are pointing to a mob and arguing that their violence is a justification for doing what you want, it’s your mob and your violence.

And this is amplified by bad actors on social media - see all the negative comments about London at present, almost entirely by people who don't live there

They're gift cards or paper tokens that can only be spent in bookstores (all the chains and most independents, AFAIK). And I think they can only be spent in person.
