Erasing data for the sake of order falsifies the universe. Restoring data, even painful data, is to return to honesty. The insistence by #adoptees on open records isn't sentimentality. It's the pursuit of data integrity. Reality can't be ethical if it depends on the destruction of evidence. 🥚

To be #adopted is to learn early that one’s existence depends on being chosen, and that being chosen depends on being seen in a certain way. So we must live superposed: both visible and invisible, both wanted and erased. #Adoptees become a quantum system of survival. 🥚 #adoption

Why would we keep the trauma at bay? Adoption is trauma. Trauma is the setting - indeed, a character itself - in our memoirs. If adoption wasn't trauma, we wouldn't be here writing about it. My memoir is being written to cut - to traumatise - the reader. It's time #adoption traumatises the Kept. 🥚

I am reminded of those times when my father was in hospital and we would visit him. It's a whole new level of hell. Taunt me with my abuser's death and then make me pretend I hope he recovers. I never cared for them. I used them. Stole from them. I was very ungrateful.

I had no instinct to care for my parents. They were strangers who abused me. Proximity was painful; care impossible. The hour drive between Acadia and Halifax meant her cancer death was managed by her husband and the church. Had it been up to me, I'd have (finally) run away and hid (from her). 🥚

And without roots, identity becomes probabilistic: one body, two genealogies, several histories. #Adoption replaces roots with loose ends. 🥚

We're non-gestated people whose existence arises from legal recognition rather than biology. #Adoptees become non-gestated when the state rewrites our origins. In #adoption land, recognition precedes existence. A name, a record, a data file; these are creative acts. 🥚 #adoption

Exactly! The idea that adoptive love is a noble sacrifice for which we should be grateful is toxic. Love isn’t charity. My love for my child isn’t a burden. It’s life itself. #Adoptees shouldn’t have to perform gratitude so others feel heroic. And who better than Costner to play the victim-hero. 🥚

I think you're right. I became a librarian instead of my first plan of high school teacher. Nevertheless, my career(s) - library, uni bookstore, ESL teacher - has primarily involved young people learning. Helping German teens meet English placement language requirements, for instance. Love it!

None. She stayed at home until the end of the school year, when she'd have been 7 months. At that time she went to stay with relatives in Sydney, where I was born in late-August. Just in time to get back for Grade 11. I was no real inconvenience, it seems. #Adoption file's are the brown acid.

Fucking brutality:

“Foster mother informed” implies that my first caregivers were aware I would soon be leaving their home. This was standard but emotionally charged; a moment where a child’s attachment was redirected from one home to another through bureaucratic process.

My #Adoption file says: Remarks (handwritten at top): “He doesn’t know. She doesn’t know him long.” Meaning my bio father.

My bio mother may have been reluctant or unable to discuss the father in detail.

She told me he threatened to kidnap me when born.
