The assignment to every ambitious politician rn is: How do you make the political process as immediately consequential as possible? People aren’t sick of politics. We crave it, because it gives us a sense of agency in our lives and world. Which is the way it should be.

Whoever figures out how to make our system more reactive to public opinion while protecting minority rights will win the next ten elections. It’s not about a policy agenda and it’s definitely not about style.

This had staggering consequences over the next century. In the US, German immigrants comprised about 25% of the Union Army and were instrumental in destroying the Confederacy.

The largest ethnic group in America is still German because so many people fled after the failed 1848 Revolution. All the liberals who supported the overthrow of monarchical systems left either to achieve their dreams elsewhere or flee conservative retribution.

The reason pretty much all European Americans are here is because our ancestors came from countries that were "shitholes" at the time. They were, by and large, refugees fleeing war, famine, and persecution. A lot of them were criminals or declared enemies of the states they left.
