I think Lauren is correct that this piece does ignore or elide the valid leftist critiques, but there is a dismissiveness around the users of AI that is a big part of why those critiques are largely failing. The stakes are too high to keep repeating unsuccessful tactics, or to keep scolding users.

What do you mean by "working on it"? I do research on small models, teach workshops on running them on local equipment, and am writing a paper, but since you said "slop" I'm guessing I might not be the kind of person you're looking for?

The promise was always that digital humanities would be fully subsumed into the humanities - make the "digital" redundant. But the AI age has really accelerated the the "D" over the "H" in the field, causing big splits between "digital" and "public" humanities instead of "digital" vs "traditional"

This is extremely sensible and I'm a little mad that a lot of it didn't occur to me; I guess I'm sort of inured by dint of me feeling this is a sort of ongoing evolution of outsourcing rather than some seismic rewrite of it, but yeah, and maybe particularly on the historical optimism bit.

Slower/more uneven rollout meaning no critical mass conversation and easier to write dissenters off as cranks, underresourcing making in-house solutions less obviously preferable, not to mention more tech optimism of 20 years ago vs the full fascism court press of the present set.
