Okay. Time to start again.

I wish the bad blood could end. I wish Iโ€™d never lit the match that ignites the fuel.

But Iโ€™m not going to live inside that guilt. I canโ€™t change the past. God knows Iโ€™ve done stupid shit before that, and Iโ€™ll probably be guilty of more stupid shit before I die.

Why was this four-year-old drama being dug up again? For entertainment, maybe. Or maybe as a warning to new members. โ€œWE are good, THEY are evil. Make sure not to associate with THOSE people, you might catch the evil too.โ€

I hadnโ€™t thought about that shit for years until my wife learned this week that a bunch of folks had blocked her for what seemed like no reason, and learned that the story of that awful time was being rehashed again in the Discord we used to frequent.

I was drunk and angry. I was so depressed that I ended up hospitalized for a month afterward. These are not excuses, Iโ€™m just explaining my mental state at the time. It was wrong and stupid, and I apologized. And Iโ€™ll apologize again: I am sincerely sorry for what I said.

Ah, youโ€™re right, I misread the beginning of the review. My mistake!

I think it really shook him, and I hope it stays with him for a long time. He wanted a VN from a guyโ€™s viewpoint paying for a bunch of shallow female archetypes to objectify, and instead he got actual complex characters who broke his misogyny bubble and made him uncomfortable. I love it.

To me, itโ€™s obvious the reviewer was โ€œsickโ€ because of the trans content more than anything else. Frankly, his *review* made me sick, and demonstrates toxic masculine ideas of women being either โ€œpromiscuous and looseโ€ or โ€œpristine and wholesomeโ€, and god *forbid* the two ever meet.

Related: Blueskyโ€™s character limit is waaaaay too limiting. Iโ€™ve been spoiled by Mastodonโ€™s much wordier allowances.

Thinking this morning about patterns of thought I fall into. Hyperbole. Bizarre/rapid-fire humor. Attention-seeking. Hypomania/depression. And, yes, various kinks. They all have one connecting thread: rapid, efficient generation of endorphins.

This is a post about ADHD.

Iโ€™ve been gone for a while, what did I miss?

Oh wait, I canโ€™t tell, because Bluesky jumps to the top of my feed every time it refreshes!

I donโ€™t know how yโ€™all use this site when their UX is so horrible. Mastodon and Twitter โ€” TWITTER โ€” follow better HCI practices. Thatโ€™s just sad.

And for those wondering what "Batman's Aff His Nut" sounds like in a proper Glaswegian accent, here's Robert Florence, who penned it, reciting it over a Batman teaser...

Batmanโ€™s aff his nut
Have you seen the way he cuts aboot
Dressed up as a mad fuckin bat
Batterin guys
I was lit at:
โ€œMate, Iโ€™m worried aboot ye
I know your ma and da died
But everybodyโ€™s ma and da dies
And weโ€™re no aw runnin aboot
Hookin muggers and
Kickin psychopaths in the baws.โ€
And that was when Batman went
โ€œAye, but do ye ever feel like it?
Do you ever look at the world and feel like it?
Like having a big mad base under your hoose?
Do you ever feel like drivin a big mad motor
that turns intae a tank?
And leatherin fuck oot of guys aw night?
Scarin the fuckin shite oot of them?โ€
And thatโ€™s when I was lit at:
โ€œAye. Fuck it. Ah dae.โ€
And thatโ€™s the Secret Origin of Robin
And everyone else.

My wife has recently gotten *really* into makeup, and I still get Jeffree Star (racist), Patrick Starrr (human), and Patrick Star (starfish) confused regularly

Iโ€™m glad to have found you here. โ€œOpportunityโ€ was an incredible story with brilliant writing and fantastic art; I knew the moment it made me laugh out loud that it was something special!

04.10.2024 21:31 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Oh, and if you donโ€™t know (I didnโ€™t at first), a โ€œkinetic novelโ€ means a visual novel thatโ€™s basically just a linear story with art, no real choices other than tiny ones that donโ€™t really affect the storyline. So is it a โ€œgameโ€? Itโ€™s a matter of opinion. Iโ€™d call it fiction within a certain medium.

04.10.2024 20:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I wanted to remark on this because it is refreshing to see actual sex-positive media in a space so often dominated by crude stereotypes, fetishization, and chauvinism. Iโ€™m sure it isnโ€™t perfect โ€” I can only evaluate it from a cis male viewpoint, after all โ€” but it *felt* right, you know?

04.10.2024 20:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Fine, no CW then.
I finished the indie adult kinetic novel โ€œOpportunityโ€ today. And before you accuse me of being โ€œhorny on mainโ€, I have to say the writing, art, and diverse queer and racial representation was *phenomenal*. It is surprisingly wholesome and touching in parts.

04.10.2024 19:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Wait, wtf, Bluesky content warnings are only allowed if you have attached media? Are you kidding me right now?

Good lord, Mastodon is *miles* ahead in terms of user experience.

04.10.2024 19:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The reason for this is simple: some people post basically non-stop, and others post infrequently. Without categorization, the former drowns out the latter. Seeing at a glance whose writing you need to catch up on is extremely useful. But it doesnโ€™t lend itself well to algorithmic tampering. #ux

04.10.2024 19:49 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I only learned after their shutdown that Cohost had the option of separately seeing how many unread posts were waiting from each of the people you were following, a la LiveJournal. If I had known that existed, Iโ€™d have been there *all the time*. That is IMO the best #ux for a social network.

04.10.2024 19:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Oh wait, no, I forgot, Bluesky decided theyโ€™d go ahead with their own completely separate incompatible federating protocol. So much for that idea. (Admittedly I hear ActivityPub leaves a lot to be desired, but did we really have to reinvent the wheel *again*?)

04.10.2024 19:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Heck, the only reason I popped online now is because I wanted to follow someone who was formerly on Cohost before I forgot to do so. Although, now that I think of it, if my Mastodon host allows federating with bsky maybe I can just follow from thereโ€ฆ

04.10.2024 19:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I would legit check Bluesky as much as I check Mastodon if theyโ€™d just remember where I last stopped reading, and the reason is psychological: when the feed is at the top, my brain thinks โ€œwelp, Iโ€™m doneโ€. Iโ€™m not gonna scroll down and read everything in reverse chronological order.

04.10.2024 19:36 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

For the love of god, #Bluesky, implement a โ€œlast-read postโ€ bookmark for peopleโ€™s feeds. Please. Twitter remembers where you last stopped reading, Mastodon does, but you refresh to the top of the feed every time, so I always miss *tons* of posts. This is some serious #uxfail here.
