Trump could toss his core supporters - about 25% of the US electorate - into a concrete pit, throw them a hot dog and hose them down once a day and they would not repudiate him. They would, in fact, contort their rhetoric into asserting that he did the right thing. Soviet show trial shit.

In large part, the electorates in democracies are just in a wave of rage and acting out, egged on by a desperate political media. They have that agency and they are the ones deciding, not the politicians who they then blame for the consequences of getting what they demand of politicians.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.
