Just painted with a brush. Watercolor and the whites of the waves are gouache

A simplified, cozy scene. I’m working on developing my ability to edit down and stylize a scene to emphasize the feeling of a painting.

Wet rocks again! I loved the layout of the reference I found. It had these cool cliffs with lots of trees and vegetation zigzagging around.

The reference was a bit dark and I found the water color a bit artificial. I love how the painting came out!

A bit more experimentation with transparent water. I actually ended up struggling the most with the hilly forest in the background. It’s hard to find a balance between showing enough detail to inform the viewer and not painting every tree.

I’m not sure how I feel about this one. I’m happy with how the underwater rocks came out, but a lot of other elements might have gotten overworked.

I focused on practicing getting interesting textures and colors into grass here. It can be difficult to get detail in while keeping a sense of distance in the field. Here’s my latest attempt.

Covfefe.

Latte art in watercolor. It ended up being so much harder than I thought. It’s hard to preserve all that whitespace. What do you think?

So, it’s sorta a repost, but I ended up fiddling with this one. Way too much. I practiced bird shapes beforehand, but I still ended up having to cover up a ton of them. That’s… what happened with the white swatches in the sky. It kinda works though?

Painted as a gift. I’ve been struggling with getting sloppy with my technique. I wanted this one to be a simple composition where technique and careful timing and layering are everything

A bit moody. Really happy with the solution I came up with for the sense treeline here. Water was a bit of a rescue mission after my first attempt went wrong

This is a vertical watercolor painting of a mountain. The top of the painting is covered with a textured dark blue. The blue is faded to a purply red in vertical streaks that finally fade to a light blue that swirls around the mountain peaks. A white splatter covers the whole painting. The effect is a colorful, wintery sky with a light snow blowing through. A detailed mountain sits below the sky. Its highest peak reaches two thirds of the way up the painting. It is a skinny peak that is slightly angled to the left. The left side is shaded with blacks and blues while the right catches the sun revealing yellow and red rocks covered in white snow. Two more peaks sit below the tallest. One to the right and one to the left. Their colors and textures mimic the tallest creating a composition that guides the eye through the painting in a zig zag pattern from left to right and back to the left again at the bottom of the painting.

Absolutely amazing, man. So much constructed out of values. Really hard to communicate that much going on without it looking busy at all. The type of painting I save to learn from. Thanks for sharing!

Painter here. I’m in awe of your use of white-space. That’s definitely an area that drawing would help me improve. Not easy!

Nice painting! I do hope the birds in Suffolk were doing alright.

I definitely play with editing once my paintings are scanned. I go back and forth on how I feel about it. It helps when I consider that the original looks dramatically different in different lighting. Adjustments have the same effect
