On Monday, I will remotely talk at #AALAS about the evolution of exudivory in marmosets and why it matters for husbandry of captive marmosets. Really excited to share some marmoset evolution biology that can help biomedical and industrial applications and improve marmoset wellbeing.

This week at #SIP I talked about my work on characterization of the marmoset MHC I and II regions from the marmoset T2T genome and wild marmosets. We are building up to a marmoset MHC pangenome that will include wild common and black tufted marmosets. The annotations are in prep for publication.

As Andrew found out, there comes a time when enough is enough. I don’t know what will be the breaking point but believe the day will come when the majority of the American public will loudly say ENOUGH.
The elected officials in DC will be forced to make the change.

a close up of a tan dog with a black snoot and golden brown eyes. he's so close we can see the whiskers on his lip and the grooves in his nose. he looks above the camera with a slightly bewildered expression. the resemblance to the sonogram truly is uncanny.

A pregnant woman was shocked to realize her sonogram resembled her dog's face. InΓͺs Egner went in for her 20-week anatomy scan and left with a photo that looked exactly like her dog, Goulash. She said, "In truth, we do like to jokingly refer to the dog as our son." 14/10 (TT: inesverse)

eLife Assessment

This important study reports the results of efforts to replicate two phenomena of significant interest to early-career scientists and scientific policymakers: the Matthew effect and the early-career setback effect. Several previous studies of these effects have focused on early-career researchers with grant proposals that fell just below or just above a funding threshold. Those just above the threshold were more likely to be successful when they applied for funding later in the career (an example of the well-known Matthew effect), while those just below were more likely to go on to have stronger publication records (the early-career setback effect). In this study the Matthew effect was found to be robust across funders, and to generalize from those close to the funding threshold to the whole population. The early-career setback effect was not robust across funders and did not generalize to the whole population. The evidence reported is convincing.

Evidence from 14 research funding programmes confirms that early winners tend to keep winning (Matthew effect). But the idea that an early setback makes you stronger later doesn’t replicate widely.

This is true and what is happening is awful. But what about after new PhD gets their wings so to speak. the academic job market for most PhDs at least in STEM is pretty dire. Too much cheap labor from PhD students, too many PhDs churned out world wide and where are all they supposed to go ??

US PhD admissions shrink as fears over Trump’s cuts take hold Some doctoral programmes are admitting no students at all amid uncertainty about federal science funding.

Fewer grad students means less science, but many STEM PhD programs in the US are cutting back on admissions this year due to federal funding uncertainties. Words by me for @nature.com:
